I know nothing about babies - and I'm invited to a quickly thrown together baby shower for someone I work with on Friday.

I was told she already got everything on her baby registry so to just get "general" baby stuff. Problem is, I don't know what that means!

Any suggestions? What do people usually spend on shower gifts? If I get clothes, what size should I get?

She is having a boy in December.

My favorite gift is to get a small basket and fill it with necessities: powder, shampoo, diaper rash cream, baby wash, infant Tylenol (for that first round of shots), ipecac (if you can find it), baby lotion, etc. Brands are up to you.

Good luck and congrats to your co-worker.

My sister was given several gift certificates to restaurants that deliver. They came in handy when they came home with the baby.

Well, you get diapers and wipes, she'll need those anyway, a couple small bottles, a blanket, towel, a pack of socks, newborn size shirts, shampoo, lotion. I went to a friends baby shower last week and we got items like these, then i put them in a basket and done! I spend about 25.00 in wal mart, is you go to a baby store you might spend a little more, but i went for items that the baby can use everyday.
:confused3

These are all great ideas. Another idea is to pick up a nice little selection of board books. It is never to early to read to a child! Madeline loves the Sandra Boynton board books, and there are also some great Dr. Suess ones. The board books are great because little fingers can't tear them up, like they can the "big-kid" books.

a basket full of baby/kid books, preferably board books. Some ideas:

The Big Red Barn
Is Your Mama a Llama?
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Goodnight Moon
Five Little Ducks
The Going to Bed Book
Say Goodnight

Honestly, I loved getting gift certificates to Babies R Us. I was able to buy diapers, formula and other baby necessities that I needed.

If you don't want to give a gc, the gift basket w/diapers, wipes, lotion, etc. is a great idea. That stuff will always be used.

Gift cards to target/walmart/toysrus/babiesrus/babydepot are great ideas because the mom can get things she still needs.

Otherwise, you can get diapers and wipes (always needed). I usually get size 1 diapers because everyone tends to buy newborn and they dont' last long. You can get baby bath/powder/lotion, etc. to go with it if you want.

You could also get clothes, socks, baby blankets, etc. For clothes, I also try to buy sizes a little bigger because they usually get so many newborn things.

I like the photo album idea, a newborn baby will have lots of pictures taken. If you get a gift card, you could put it in the front slot of the album.
