Help- at home hair coloring

I agree with using the reddish brown shades instead of using ones marked "auburn." From my experience, the auburn shades are usually mostly red pigment.

Some tips: red is the quickest haircolor shade to fade, even if it's permanent color. In about 2 weeks the red shades begin to look a little washed out.


It's also the hardest to remove if you were to use color oops or lighten your hair. Basically the hair would turn a brassy golden color and you'd have to dye it again.

Straight color from a box will NOT give you amazing highlights. Four, hair color is chemistry. I found her to be extremely negative about at home color. There isn't one positive thing in her post. The OP has been dying her own hair already. She's just unsure of the color she should choose.

I just happened to jump back to this post, and I do not mean to open this topic back up, but it seems I need to defend myself. I was cautioning using a box color to CHANGE her previously colored hair color, as it WILL NEVER TURN OUT. Color does not lift color. I guess the post can be viewed as negative as I shared my negative option on box color. The previous comment was correct that I have NO clients on this board. I see your opinion on box color all day long by my many clients who understand you get what you pay for in my hair cuts (which still are very competitive and reasonably priced) but still more expensive than a "great clips" sort of place. Many people,for some reason, value my professional skill when it comes to cutting but become aggressively confrontational when it comes to color. I do not doubt that your hair looks amazing, and I am sure you get tons of complements. Trust me, you are one of small percentage of people who have not messed up their hair. And I am glad for you. But, next time you have a special event; or do one day, mess up your color, who you gonna call? =)
Just don't be mad about it it. And understand that ultimately it will cost you more to achieve the result you are looking for because of all the years of box color you have put on your head. They are just different products. Fact.

I am a red head. My haircolor was fading and I was going gray.
Had to do something about it so started using Loreal Excellence 6R.
I get so many compliments on it, even my hairdresser.
No, its not perfect, but it works for me.
It is as close to my real haircolor as I can get.
My sister, a redhead too, gets her done at the salon. It looks terrible.
Much too brassy, but she just goes a long with it.
I have tried to talk her into doing it at home but she says it won't turn out right. Nevermind the fact that she likes how mine looks.

The OP was asking for advice from home colorers on choosing a better red. She wasn't asking for advice on home vs. Salon coloring. How is informing her of the evils of home color helpful when that is what she has decided to use?

I'm not mad about anything. I didn't pull up a two month old thread.

If your clients become aggressively confrontational, perhaps you should look at how you are speaking to them.

Retired Hair Stylist here. Not familiar with Garnier at all but going back to color basics you need an green color to cancel out red.

So try mixing an Ash (A) or a Neutral (N) color with the color you currently use. Mix it 50/50
You might want to try a strand test to make sure you like it before putting it over your whole head.
If you ever do color & it's flaming red & you don't like it you can immediately recolor with an Ash to tone it down.

Whoa. I understand that she was not weighing the pros and cons of salon vs at home color. I was offering some free advice. She clearly expressed that she has been coloring her hair for a few months and needed help choosing the shade. I was helping her to understand: That it is not as easy as picking the picture on the box and putting it on her hair; BECAUSE she has already previously colored her hair. You cannot keep trying new shades and achieve a pure result. I am not preaching, I am educating. That is all.

John Freida foam makes the best auburns that will not make your hair shocking red or orange. I have been coloring my hair at HOME for YEARS with no issues. I love the way Feria makes my hair look, but it was always too red for the first few weeks. John Freida comes out perfect from the start. Don't let the salon folks scare you, you certainly CAN get a nice color at home for less than 15 bucks. Oh and I have a lot of thick long hair, and the foam covers more hair I only need one box, whereas I always needed 2 with Feria. Try the John Freida foam you will not be disappointed.

I have dark brown hair with lots of red naturally. When I started coloring, I always tried to choose a color closest to my natural color. Big mistake!! No matter what brand, it came out too red. For years, I have used hair color in the "golden brown" family. I currently use light golden brown. It doesn't come out golden at all, it just seems to be perfectly light brown, with very little reddish highlights.

I use the John Freida too, in a basic brown, 5N. The foam is super easy to work with and I always love the way it comes out.

I have a friend who is a colorist and used to do my hair before she moved away, and I learned a lot from her about what the different numbers and letters mean. Coloring hair really is a science.
