HELP - all our fish are dying

I had over 40 fish in my pond and every day last week one or two were dead. We cleaned the pool out and removed the poorly looking fish who later died. We had several strong swimmers who seamed ok and put them back but last night another one died and today several more look lifeless

I've only got 7 left they are normal garden pond gold fish about 3 years old.

Does anyone know whats happening ?

Hmmm strange. Only thing I can think of is that one or two fish were poorly and it has passed onto the other fish. Even though you have cleaned the pond out the fish would of still passed on the germs in the container you put them in whilst cleaning or they already have it. How do they look. Are there fins intact? Do they look blood shot or any loss? Any fungus on the fish? If so you can put some liquid I used to buy, but we had them in a tank. I would probably say if not all or but most of the remaining fish will die. If they all do pass away. I would clean your pond and the filters again, before buying anymore fish.

Has something contaminated the water ie garden food or insecticide? We have a problem with a heron. It pierces the side of the fish but isn't lifting them out and the end up with a big sore on the side of their body which gets infected. Our plastic fake heron didn't scare the real one off. I've seen the real one and it's enormous!

Moving them around can stress them out, sounds more like a disease !!

Have you cleaned the filter sponge, this time of year they get really mucky. Try taking a sample of water to your local aquatic store to have it tested if there is a problem they will be able to advise you. I have tropical fish as well as a pond and i have found fish go in stages a lot die together then you can go for months without losing any. Hope you get things sorted.

Is there any building work going on near you? A small amount of concrete powder can devastate a pond.

No idea but lost another three today and the five that are left are now swimming on their sides.

The fish were fine until the birds started bathing in the water
The blackbirds, turtle doves and the wood pigeons were all having baths in the water which they have never done before.
Apart from this we cannot think of anything that has been any different.

We will have to have the pond emptied out and sterilized before starting again. I feel really sad as most of the fish were born in the pond and the others were gifts from my children
