Help a newbie with avatar?

Okay, I'm stumped.
I have seen personalized avatar photos for several members, and I would love to add one of my very own. However, I don't see any option on how to do this. Can any of you DISboard veterans help a confused newbie? Thanks!

We don't currently have the ability to add custom avatars.

Any custom avatars you see have been in place for many months.
