We will be at WDW 9/20-9/27 for the first time as a family. Our son is 6 (he turns 7 while we're there! :) ), and our daughter is 4. I'm mainly concerned about the FP+ for MK, as we will spend at least 2 full days touring there. Any tips on where and how to start when booking our FP+?? What about using rider swap to maximize our FP+? Kinda overwhelming for this newbie! Thanks in advance!!

Rider swap traditionally only works with babies. If your girl is small, then she does qualify, but most 4 year olds can go on 95% of WDW rides. Thats what makes it so family friendly. :thumbsup2 No need to exclude her.
Is your boy a bit of a risk taker? Space, Splash and Big Thunder plus the Mine train are the only "scary" type rides and I think they only ones with a height requirement (oh and the autopia). If you girl is into Frozen that must be one of you FP+ and I would recommend Peter pan and at least a mountain or two. A member on here did a full FP+ writeup. He doesn't post in the family section but in the attractions section. He breaks it all down. I want to say it was Mezaboy, but I may be wrong.

Are you staying inside the park at one of the resorts? If so FP+ opens July 22.. We are vacationing the same dates

You'll also want to think about what time of day you want to use the FPs. If you need to take a nap/swim break in the middle of the day that's going to effect the times you want. We went in June with my 5 year old and 2 year old sons. What worked for us was getting to the parks at rope drop, leave around lunch for a break/nap, and then we would use all of our FPs for when we returned in the evening. With this plan in the busy summer times we never waited more than 20 minutes for a single ride and we rode everything.

I would also suggest going to easywdw.com. Josh (who runs the site) has some great cheat sheets and strategies that you might find very helpful.

Have a fun vacation!

Yes, we are staying at Grand Floridian. Thanks for the date info! Maybe we'll bump into each other. ;)

OK, short answer: begin in Fantasyland.

Most of Fantasyland is too young for my family (though Peter Pan is a MUST DO for my family, and I alway drag them onto Small World.) But it's perfect for your family.

Mesaboy has a fabulous thread on which FPs give you the most bang for the buck in terms of saving you time:
