hi -
my 1 year old neice just broke her tibia - got her foot stuck behind her as she went down the slide,,,,

we are going to disney for night of joy in sept - do you think she will have a full cast? any tips? yikes - im worried the poor little girl will be so hot and uncomfortable!!!

thanks, wendy:confused:

My 3 yr old broke a bone in his foot in May. He was in a cast for 3 weeks. It was more bothersome for DH and me than it was for him, to tell you the truth. Keeping it dry was a chore when showering/bathing him. After he got the hang of it, he was walking around with it like a pro. If your niece is pretty good about staying in her stroller, you probably won't have any trouble. Plus, by the time you go, she'll be used to the cast if she still has it!

don't know about full cast or not- but I can relate. My DD broke her leg last April going down a slide. (She was on my sisters lap & her leg got caught on the slide as well. My sister didn't notice so didn't stop right away.) She was 3 almost 4.

I know what they did for my DD was 3 weeks in a full cast (her break was high on the tibia). The dr had said they could do a partial cast but was worried about her jumping or falling and twisting it causing more damage. Ultimatly it was my choice but I wasn't gonna chance it.

After the 3 weeks we went back for another x-ray and the Dr said since things were healing well I could recast it or go for a walking boot....I went with the boot. The boot was removable so she got to take real showers & was allowed to swim (well float- which is all she does anyway since she is still in water wings).

After 3 weeks in the boot she was allowed to take it off and didn't need anything- even though there was still a visible break on the x-ray there was enough healing bone that she was ok w/o anything....and today we fianlly went back for her last x-ray and got the all clear!!!

She did go to Disney with the cast for her b-day and got Mickey to sign it. It really didn't slow her down at all after the first day. Once she got used to it on she was running and jumping (my kid is very active) like normal.
As for FL- We live in FL and the cast didn't bother her- the thing smelled terrible- but she never complained about it being hot. The Dr had also told me to give her benadryl for the itching.

The only thing I can think of that would impact your vacation is no pools. Unless she gets the walking boot you probably will have to forfeit down days at the pool.

Hi sorry to hear about her leg. I do know when my son broke his foot (he was in a cast from the knee down), we were going on vacation at the time. He was able to get what they called a water cast, it's made out of a different type of material so he was able to get it wet, depending on the break you may want to ask if that's a possibility. I was skeptical at first when they said he could shower and swim in it, but he did, and he when he finished he just had to sit and let the water drain down through his toes, he didn't itch (again I believe because of the material inside), he was fine and we had a great vacation. Hope this helps.

My son had a waterproof cast a few years ago too! I had never heard of them, but that was the first break ever in our family. I was carrying him down the stairs, and I fell(right onto his leg). It broke in 2 places(the tibia and the other bone in the lower leg). Talk about feeling bad!!! What a terrible mom I was!!! My husband was out of town, of course. My parents came over and we took him to the hospital. The doctor on call was one that did the waterproof casts. We were scheduled to go to Gulf Shores about 2 weeks after that, and I was so worried that we would not be able to go. The doctor said "No problem. He can swim and bathe in this one!!". My DS did great!!! It was hot there too, but no problems at all!!! It was a lifesaver, the waterproof cast!!:thumbsup2

My DS broke his leg near the ankle a month before his 2nd birthday. He was in a full leg cast (toe to hip) for 3 weeks. Kids heal real quick the dr said. He was up and running around on the cast within 2 days. Even used it to help him escape from his crib!:rotfl:

Awww...Poor little thing! My oldest DD has a cast on right now. She broke a bone in her foot and her cast goes up to right below her knee. We had a choice to get a waterproof cast, but it would've been $150 more, so we said "no".
