I know this is old but everyone hop over to the thread about the people stranded at the airport because of the canceled flights to Europe and how they can't figure a way to find a place to stay or call someone to help--THIS is what happens when you don't let your child figure things out on their own.

that was totally my parents. well, more so my mom, my dad had not too much say in my childhood(surprisingly, you usually hear it being the other way around, right?).

it almost scares me away from having kids, myself. i don't want to turn into that.

WOW! I am suprised at the extent that goes too. I thought it was just being a bit overprotective but I must admit hearing your, and other stories of the extent is amazing.

more so because when I was growing up, almost the opposite was the norm.

If we made a mistake in school and got a bad grade, my parents (and all my friends parents) would never think of going to the teacher, we would get a lecture on doing more study time and homework.

Playing in the street? thats what they were made for! (hehe)

I remember in the summer, my friends and I would go to each others house, or ride our bikes all around the town and not see are parents uintil me HAD to be home for dinner. we were all pretty independent.
