Hi, it doesn't taste like mayo exactly. It is salad dressing but you can also use it for a dip for veggies. It sort of makes me think of egg salad sandwich flavour if kwim. It can't be that expensive can it? Give it a try!
If it is expensive, I wouldn't bother, it's nothing particularly special imho. Just part of the british culture. When I lived there several years ago, they just didn't have the range of choices for salad dressings like we do. It was either mayo or salad cream. I brought over some french dressing and people were like "ugh, gross, that is so wierd, who would put THAT on their salad!". Times are probably changing, they were bringing out more and more american convenience food (like kraft dinner!) by the time I left.
Enjoy! Or not lol.![]()
Sounds gross but I think all Heinz products taste disgusting.
It is somewhat like mayonaise but has a bit of a tart or acidic kick to it...it's good.![]()

This thread's making me laugh - I didn't realize it was just a British thing, although come to think of it, I haven't seen it since I moved to the States! I never thought the name was weird either
Salad cream is kind of like mayo, but it has a more tangy flavor. You can put it on salads like you would a regular salad dressing, that's what my mom does - but I used to put it on sandwiches a little more like you'd use mayo. It goes great with things like cold chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches. It's also really good in egg salad, gives it more of a tart flavor.
You've made me crave it now! Just thinking about it reminds me of home![]()
If they sell it at Walmart, it can't be that pricey. Live a little, get the dressing!
even their ketchup?!
Heinz Salad Cream is the best
I don't particularly like mayo but HSC is a good substitute. I use it instead of butter on bread when making chicken or ham sandwiches. It's also awesome with chips (fries).
If you mix equal quantities of HSC and Heinz Tomato Sauce (ketchup) you can make a prawn cocktail dressing.![]()

And right there you just lost the Americans, LOL. No one here uses butter on sandwiches unless they are being made hours in advance for a party tray. Last time I was home in Ireland my aunt made me a chicken sandwich and put butter on it -- which threw me a bit because I hadn't had butter on a sandwich in nearly 20 years!
I like Salad Creme, too. It's good stuff, and I also prefer it as a sandwich condiment.
BTW, another thing not many Americans "get" is brown sauce. Some stores here carry HP, but most Americans don't have a taste for it. I adore it, especially on breakfast meats and bacon butties. (Right now I've got 8 bottles of UK-recipe HP in my cupboard because there is only one store in my city that carries it, so I stockpile when I find it.)
