Hedging my bets 1BR vs 2BR

If I book a lock off 2BR at BCV at 11 months, is there any chance that I could call MS and modify to a 1BR later on if my kids decide not to come?

Alternatively, if I book the 1BR and the studio separately, will they put us next to each other if my kids do come? Would I just have to request and hope for the best?

DVC has booking categories, as I'm sure you know. If you book at 2BR lock-off, you can't downgrade. If you book a 1BR, you can also book a studio and have the reservations marked as "traveling together" or "rooms close". The chances of being directly next to each other are very slim. So yes, book, request, and hope for the best. Hopefully, the kids will decide soon enough that perhaps you can modify your reservation, based on availability.

Not knowing the ages of your kids, I'd probably book at 1BR and a studio - then you could cancel the studio if they don't come. Or book the 2BR (which would be less points than 1BR/studio separately), and if they don't come, you'll have lots of space!

Yeah thanks for the confirmation of what I figured. My kids are adults and are unable to confidently plan 11 months out. I want to have the room if they can come but don’t want to pay 2BR points for just hubby and me. But if we’re not all together in the 2BR configuration, it’s kind of a bummer also. Sigh. Not sure what to do.

When will their plans firm up? If still within the 7-11 month priority window you're probably still good to be able to get a 1 bedroom. But after that, your only choice may be to move resorts if you need to downgrade.

They might be able to commit by 7 months. Good thought to book the 2BR and change to a more available 1BR later if need be. Always have the OKW or SSR options for more availability at 7 months also.

1BR units remain available well beyond 7 months at several resorts, not just OKW and SSR - but yes, your chances are the best at those two resorts just due to the size for sure.

Id book the 2 bedroom and downsize if needed and hope the 1 bedroom is still there, especially since they are the last to go.
