We are planning our 1st ever off-site Disney Trip. We have stayed on property 10 times in the past. My concern is that I need a scooter and usually rent from an outside company and then use the Disney buses. This time we will have to drive to the parks and my question is how to transport the ECV. Has anyone rented from a company and loaded it into a truck. The company I normally rent from is Care Medical and they said the scooter could not be taken apart. I always get a heavy duty one because I am pooh sized. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.:confused3

If they say that theirs cannot come apart, unless you have a ramp or lift I would suggest checking with another company. I know the total weight of my ECV, which does come apart, is on the close order of 140 pounds and it is not heavy duty.

If you look in the disABILTIES FAQ you will see contact information aboutr other companies, I would suggest calling both Walker's and Randy's. Give them information about your height and weight and they should be able to assist you.

If you are not able to get one that comes apart for transport, you may be able to get by with renting a ramp - you will find inforamtion with the ECV rental information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

I rented a scooter from Scootarama for my husband. I used their web site to place the order. About a week after I placed my reservation they sent me a 40+ page guide by email. There are detailed instructions on disassembly. I can send it to you if you are interested.

Hi, We rented a heavy duty scooter from Walkers last January. It come apart. We rented a car as well; a jeep Larado. The scooter broke down into three pieces and fit fine in the back of the jeep. It was really comfortable too - size wise.

Excuse me, but the original poster said that Care Medical had specifically stated that the particular heavy duty ECV they rent out is not designed to be disassembled. And there are lots of manufacturers of mobility equipment and each have multiple models.

Agreed, but the OP also made it sound like she might consider another model from another vendor if it could be disassembled. I believe myself and the other poster were just trying to be helpful by informing the OP that there are heavy duty models that come apart.

Yes...I was just trying to offer other options. The one we have rented is a HD mobility scooter, my DH is 6'5" and 450lbs, with bad knees and shoulders from too much college football. He needed an HD with an adjustable height seat that could accomodate his long legs. Since we are not staying at a WDW Resort, but at GKTW, I was more concerned about fitting the scooter into the back of a Suburban with 7 passengers in it, than I was about the weight of the scooter, although if they weigh 140lbs like people say they do, that is a concern too. I need to find out what the weight of the heaviest piece is disassembled, and determine whether or not my 14 year old DS and I can manage it. The guide I have gives step by step instructions on disassembly, and could be helpful in making a decision on brands. It was my original impression that the OP said they have rented from Care Medical in the past when they stayed at WDW, and they are exploring options now. I got scooterama's info from another thread on this site. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers (or fur Mr. Cat :) ). Just learning and planning for my family, and trying to help others at the same time.

We rented a HD and a regular ECV in December and my DH and I just lifted the whole thing into the back of the minivan without taking them apart. I don't think I would even consider doing it with a car, only a vehicle that opens like a minivan. The ones we rented could be taken apart, but it was just easier to lift them in as one piece. HTH.
