I was using my oven a few minutes ago and when I heard a large buzz and glanced over and saw a bright flame in the oven. I turned it off and discovered that the heating (baking) coil was on fire and burnt through. I called GE and they have the part. Has anyone replaced a coil in an oven? It looks like there are two screws on either side that might looses and tighten the part. Any info will be helpful. The part is $74 with shipping. I figure this is cheaper than an appliance repair guy.

Same thing happened here. GE sent us the part, DH replaced it in about a minute, he says it was easy, that was a year or so ago and it's worked fine ever since.

I don't think you'll find it too hard to do. Good luck :)

My mom replaced the one in her oven last year. The landlord told her she could do it herself and send the receipt in with the rent check (after deducting the cost from the check) or wait a week for him to get back from vacation--he was literally on his way out the door to the airport when she called!

The funny part--she sold her house and moved into this condo a few years ago so she didn't have to deal with repairs anymore!

Ah well, the landlord is actually a great guy and she has super neighbors!
