Heathrow Terminal 5 Escalator ?

I have been reading that terminal 5 has a very long open escalator.

Is this true and is there any other way up?

I get quite panicky on escalators where you can see the drop while riding - I also don't like glass lifts. My poor family have climbed many a back staircase in department stores and hotels!

I've been to T5 quite a few times and I can't remember seeing any long
open escalators anywhere in the terminal. Where is it supposed to be?

There are some long escalators which take you down (and then up) to and from the train between the A and B and C satellites. Don't understand what you mean by 'open' though? There are lifts but I guess they will be very busy.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

I read an article the other day saying that the escalator to the arrivals lounge was the longest "open escalator" in Europe. By open I am assuming that you can walk underneath it and see the drop on either side - like in some shopping centres and department stores - rather than enclosed with walls on either side, like on the tube.

I have only been to terminal 5 once and then I never got to air side because my flight was cancelled due to snow. This year I have 2 flights that depart and return there.

It's really odd that these scare me as I have no qualms about flying, but I'm sure I would if the planes were open sided too. :)

Hopefully I have just got my facts wrong.

Are you sure it was LHR and not Gatwick?

I'm at Gatwick a lot and one of their terminals has a huge escalator thingy outside that goes in/out of the terminal.

We flew from Terminal 5 last year and I don't remember the escalators being particularly scary. I hate going down the escalator at our local Next store, it's really steep and I always try to avoid it if I can.

Hopefully you'll be too excited about your holiday to worry on the day.

I've read it's in arrivals so the holiday will be over. :(

Thanks everyone, at the end of the day I won't be allowed to stay in the airport (I think someone has already made a film along those lines :)) so if it is bad I will just have to close my eyes and leave DH to deal with the cases while I hold on tightly to the hand rail.

There will be another way to get down to accommodate wheelchairs so can you not use the lift?

Counting down to 14th May!

You're right. I think I'm just getting worked up over something that may not even be an issue. Thanks for replying.
