Heartburn & Acid Reflux Help

Well now that the gall bladder is out I have been having a few other issues though thankfully not the "explosive" ones mentioned on the gall bladder thread. My issues are really bad heartburn and well let's just call them "really juicy burps".

WHAT is the best thing to take for these symptoms?? I have tried Pepcid AC and it doesn't seem to do anything. I have to sleep propped up so that I get some relief at night.

Any words of wisdom? Thanks!!!

These days, most doctors are recommending proton pump inhibitors (they are kind of the third generation of heartburn preventers--pepcid is one of the 2nd generation).

I think there is only one over-the-counter PPI now and that's Prilosec. It works well for me. For break-through reflux I think liquid Mylanta works better than anything else I've tried (it doesn't PREVENT reflux like Pepcid and Prilosec, but it relieves that awful burning pain).

It is the MOST hardest thing I have ever done is deal with REFLUX....including quitting smoking!

Call up the Gastro and get a prescription for reflux meds....take them. I take Prevacid, it is the only thing that works for me. You may have to try others until you find one that works.

Food....
Change your diet....Here is part that is HARD. (I can't give up soda and coffee...yet )

No coffee, soda, spicy food, lemons, some spices, tomatoes...in any form (sauces, pasta,etc...) No pepper, gravies...esp. brown gravy, that is a KILLER.
Find your "weird" triggers.
Like lemon-lime drinks for me, like Sprite, will just kill me.

Do NOT eat after 5pm until you get it under control with meds..even then you are not to eat before bed.

The best non-prescription heartburn medication for me has been Gaviscon Extra Strength. I have been in tears before and it works every time.

My DH is on Nexium.It has been a life saver for him.They are about 6.00 a pill if you dont have insurance and we dont

I faithfully take my Prilosec every day. If I forget, I can tell by noon.

Being very pregnant and having acide reflux from ANYTHING I eat or drink, my best friend is now Zantac 150. It's over the counter and works quickly. I would still share your symtoms with your doctor as they may prescribe something better for long term.

I'll second this. Although to be honest I use the Walmart generic version and I've had great success with it.
