OK....so I'm at gymnastics watching my 6 yr. old have fun in her class. Me and another lady are chatting as we do every Tuesday and she knows that we are going to the World in Sept. So she tells me that her husband heard a rumor that some company has bought A LOT of land in Chandler (AZ) and supposedly it's Disney and they are planning on doing a theme park here. OMG!!! Would that be awesome or what??!! :goodvibes

Does anyone know anything about this???
I want to believe but my instinct is not to.

I don't know but many years ago we were sold timeshare in branson by them showing us that Disney had purchased land and would be building and they even had it printed in a paper, needless to say there still isn't any sign of Disney in Branson. Boy did my blonde roots show on that sale. :teeth:

Disney CEO Robert Iger has made it clear that Disney won't be building any new theme parks in the United States, for the foreseeable future -- not in Florida, not in California, not anywhere else. What they might do is build something else -- some other type of amusement or entertainment offering, but not a theme park.

You think Florida's hot? Imagine a park in Chandler, AZ at 1pm on a July afternoon?

OUCH!

Is that really true? With all the land still left at WDW, it seems awfully presumptuous of him to say no more theme parks there anytime soon. I have a strong suspicion if Universal starts creeping up on their attendance figures, he may have a change of heart.

Both are unlikely (the change of heart, and Universal's ascendancy). It's not presumptuous at all. His responsibility is to evaluate the market and detemine the best use of company capital. Four parks is more than enough to keep the vast majority of guests busy for the entirety of their vacation. Any differential is marginal and can be addressed by expanding the existing parks.

Disney, like most large corporations, buys and sells things totally unrelated to its theme park business. It's called speculation.

Chandler, AZ has a lot of tech companies. I would bet it was one of them expanding. Why would Disney want a theme park in a tech area? Doesn't seem to mix.

This is similar to the rumor I have heard since the late 70s that Disney bought a whole bunch of land between Houston and the Louisana border.

Yeah, there's always rumors. I remember the one a number of years ago that Disney bought land in New Hampshire and planned on making a "winter wonderland". Sounded good, but I never bought it.

When my DH was a teenager, there used to be a sign along the freeway in a place called Corby near where he lived, which is in the Midlands (in England) The sign said something along the line of Disney coming here soon. Why anyone would contemplate building a theme park in a turnip field in that part of England is beyond me, obviously they would rather build it in a turnip field in France!! I don't know who put the sign up, or if any part of the UK was in the running for the new European Disneyland, but the owners of the sign sure felt it was going to be Disneyland Corby......

while it makes perfect sense, it is still a bummer. I hoped that maybe one day they would build a Disney Sea in Orlando area. A girl can still dream right? Well, I'll just have to plan a trip to Tokyo sometime. ;)

Our school's 4th graders have always spent 3 days at an east Texas camp called Sky Ranch. A teacher told DH that they are having to find a new camp because Disney bought Sky Ranch. I haven't heard that anywhere else. I am thinking maybe DVC also.

He also added that the focus should be on making the current parks stronger (ie. add more attractions.) Everest and Soarin are good examples of that.

I have heard rumors too. I remember awhile back hearing of a new Disney theme park to be built in Australia....and I heard someone say that one was coming to Shanghai China when I visited there in February.

I cannot remember where but I thought they were going to expand DCA in California...by adding in attractions (or an area) from Disney Sea. Now THAT would be awesome. As much as I loved Disney Sea, the japanese way of souvenir shopping and dining, just don't do it for me. I sure would love that park in America.

I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and Disney actually does own property in our Historic Williamsburg area.

They had plans to build a type of educational Mickey themed park and our residents voted against it. I WAS CRUSHED :sad2: . What better way to get kids to want to learn about our roots as a country and all the history in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas (Yorktown, etc.) than to learn in through Mickey!

This ole' Old Dominion of ours! I'm still MAD!!

FWIW, DH also heard that Shanghai rumor when he was over in Shanghai a few months ago. A rumor from 2 independent sources? Maybe there's some truth in that one!

I think Disney will eventually do a second China part, but for now they have an agreement that they will not build another part for about 10 years from opening.

I have been to conferences in Scottdale in June on 2 different occasions and it was HOT! I mean hot like the air that hits you when you open the door is the same kind of hot that comes out of the oven after you preheat it then open it to put the food in. And no, being "a dry heat" doesn't make it any less hot!

The first time I went I was pregnant, but the second time I wasn't, and it was still HOT! I just can't see an attraction being open year round when the air temp is like 112 degrees for days on end!
