LOLOLOL! That's a first, I must say!

Film noir? Nah, done too often.

Let's see. Topic change.

OK. How about discussing the benefits of applying Freytag's Pyramid to the lecture of a protagonist's involvement within a Wole Soyinka novel? :teeth:

Pyramid!
I thought Dick Clark did Pyramid.
I hated that game show.

 I want to stay at Luxor some day.

Educate yourself, fool!

Not sure - there may be a street festival during that time.

Then you have - Faneuil Hall Market Place
fyi- the fourth most popular tourist destination in the United States

That place look delicious!

Is Faneuil Hall near Quincy Market? When I was in Boston years ago with my family we stayed at the Marriot Long Wharf with is near FH.

ice cream stuffed pastry - how bad could it be! :cool1:

yes - Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market are right next to each other-
that's why they call the whole thing "Faneuil Hall Market Place"
that encompasses it all.

question for you - in a few years my DBF and I want to get married in MA. The question is can you do so without being a resident? I realize other states will not legally recognize it, but we don't care. Of course this will be a few years in the future so states might change, but as it stands can anyone get married in MA or do you have to be a state resident?

I don't think that works.

BUT, you can get married in Canada.

In Feb. the NY supreme court found that the long-standing (federal) recognition of foreign marriage act (I'm certain I've mangled the name) is valid despite all recent attempts to invalidate marriages performed in other jurisdictions. In other words, if you were married legally in a foreign country and met all of the legal requirements for marriage in that country then you are considered legally married in the US. Thus, many same-sex couples are now considered legally married in the state of NY even though it isn't possible for them to get married there.

Sorry to respond to the serious part of the thread...let the hijacking resume.

thats interesting... Tell me if I am wrong, I am still trying to figure out why people are so against gays and gay marriage.

People who are against the marriage are more against it because of the thought of people beating the system and getting benefits, than of the relgious aspect. Meaning two guys move into together say they are gay get medical and tax benefits and such; beating out those who struggle.

If this is the case they need to look at it again, illegals and I am sure there are hetro doing it already. Right?

Most people are not against lesbians as must as just gay men because of the image of sex, that media has played out to public. Lesibans because its projected different as if there is a chance or more exotic.

I have a way inproper question to ask to a gay man but not going to ask here. pm me if you are willing to answer.

one other question, since topics get change so much. Who is gay in hollywierd? Other than Rosie-I cant stand her!

yeah one more,
I read this and wondered if its true or not since most 63.2555 stadstics are false

they say most people are turned gay because of a tramaic(sp?) evnet in thier life. Like a bad touch if you get my meaning.

which leads me into this one,
are people born gay or is only developed by surrounding cultrul(sp?) or life experiences?

I have tried this analogy before but it gets muddied because I don't want to break any Dis rules...bare with me:

InfernoGirl...imagine if you like a certain sex act; no body has to know this but you and your partner right? Well now, imagine if the only females who enjoyed that too had red hair. So now your walking around with a red headed woman and EVERYONE imagines they know what you do in the bedroom. Would that be fair? What if you're now a married for some years and the sex isn't as important as it was in the beginning...You're still walking around with a redhead and people still associate redheads with the kind of sex you like...and that's ALL they see when they look at you both. Wouldn't that ranckle you? People judging you on something that is none of their business, that isn't the biggest part of your personality? That doesn't have any bearing on who you are as a person?

I hope this helps put the shoe on the other foot so to speak...

As you point out, being against gay marriage because two men who are not romantically involved might get married just to get legal benefits just doesn't make sense, since anyone who wanted to could already do that by marrying someone of the opposite sex. I highly doubt most people who oppose gay marriage have thought about that possibility (unless they just saw "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" that is!). I think there is a lot of evidence showing that most people who oppose gay marriage/civil unions/domestic partnerships do so for religious reasons. Here is some data from the Pew Research Center:

Polls show that frequency of worship service attendance is a factor in the opposition to gay marriage. According to an August 2007 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, 55% of Americans oppose gay marriage, with 36% favoring it. But those with a high frequency of church attendance oppose it by a substantially wider margin (73% in opposition vs. 21% in favor). Opposition among white evangelicals, regardless of frequency of church attendance, is even higher -- at 81%. A majority of black Protestants (64%) and Latino Catholics (52%)3 also oppose gay marriage, as do pluralities of white, non-Hispanic Catholics (49%) and white mainline Protestants (47%). Only among Americans without a religious affiliation does a majority (60%) express support.

However, a 2006 Pew survey found that sizable majorities of white mainline Protestants (66%), Catholics (63%) and those without a religious affiliation (78%) favor allowing homosexual couples to enter into civil unions that grant most of the legal rights of marriage without the title. The general public also supports civil unions (54% in favor vs. 42% in opposition). As with gay marriage, white evangelicals (66%), black Protestants (62%) and frequent church attenders (60%) stand out for their opposition to civil unions.4

So it really does seem that frequent church attendance and evangelical protestantism are very good predictors of opposing any partnership rights for same-sex couples. And having no religious affiliation is a good predictor of supporting gay marriage.

I think you are right that many people have different attitudes toward lesbians than gay men. Many straight men enjoy watching lesbian porn (though lesbians in porn usually don't look anything like lesbians in real life :rolleyes1) but are just disgusted at the idea of two men having sex with each other :confused3. And I think women can get away with showing more affection in public than men without anyone realizing that they are gay because even straight women tend to be affectionate with other women in ways that straight men are not affectionate with other men. So I think there is perhaps a more tolerance of lesbianism. BUT, lesbians still aren't any better off in terms of legal status or protections than gay men are. So even though lots of straight men like to watch two women have sex, those same men often still don't support two women making a family together or having health insurance for their children.

People do say that, but there doesn't seem to be any good evidence for its truth. The American Psychological Association, for instance, says there is no evidence that sexual abuse is more common amongst gay people.

As for what makes people gay (or straight!), there really is no answer. What is clear is that people do not have control over their sexuality--they cannot simply make a decision to be attracted to men and viola they are attracted to men.

Other than that, nobody really knows why people are attracted to one or both sexes anymore than they know why some people like chocolate and others dislike it. There are some studies that seem to imply some type of genetic, hormonal, or physiological differences in gay people vs. straight people, but other studies contradict them. Many of these studies are very limited by using small study sizes or focusing only on men.

Personally I tend to think there is no one cause. I happen to be attracted to males and females and I also happen to be disgusted by mayonnaise. I have no idea why the latter is the case and I don't see that it really matters, and that's how I think about the former too. I just am how I am.

Me, too!

I especially love that movie they made with Barbra Streisand playing Dali.

Yep. "Hello Dali" is one of my favorites!

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

OoooooooOooooohhhhhh -- not one of you fauve-rites??? (not to self: get job where dinking around on the internet during work hours isn't 1000% verboten...)

Oh Mr Infernogirl...(sigh) kinda looks like we are doing the "two step forward one step back" dance here a little bit.
Please remember -- an act can be legal or illegal. Human beings on the other hand, either have residency documents or do not. I live in an extremely red border state and I can absolutely tell you that those poor folks, by and large, are SO not livin' the dream. Crappy pay, no benefits, the list goes on and on...:sad2:

sorry it sounded that way.
Its not a step backward...let me explain.

I beleive anyone can come to this country as long as they do it legally. If they have a worker visa so be it, work then leave. You ahve a student visa do school then leave. My father came here from Holland and spent his life savings doing so, left his family there. He came to the US to become who ever he will be but did it legally. Of course this was in the 50s so things were different letter not email and making that call just wasnt so easy.

Because of his strong beliefs I believe you are American not whateverAmerican just American, love it or leave it. You can be proud of where your from but its either or. You have the freedom to talk bad about it or whats wrong with it but if its so bad move to a better place.

Now back to the topic started...I am really starting to understand.:thumbsup2

I can only speak for myself on this subject, but I am sure that I was born gay. I've never been "touched inappropriately", I was raised in a supportive home environment, I don't come from a "broken home" --my parents have been married for 40 years, my dad wasn't distant, my mom wasn't controlling. None of the so called "causes" apply to me. Yet, here I am.

Then there's my brother. He's less than 2 years younger than me, and was a year behind me in school. We looked enough alike that we would swap places his first year in high school before the teachers got to know us well enough to tell us appart. We had the same home environment, the same education (up to high school), we lived in the same small town, surrounded by the same supportive large family group. We essentially lived the same life until I left for college. If "gayness" is caused by the environment that we grow up in, shouldn't he be gay too? Or shouldn't I be straight?

As I said before, I knew from a very young age that I was different. I knew that I liked looking at handsome men, and that I should hide that fact early on as well. My brother never had an inkling about these facts about me until MUCH later, but he confirms that he never had any such thoughts. He liked looking at women's chests. :rotfl:

So, again, speaking only for myself. I was born this way. And I thank God for it every day. It's a wonderful gift to be me, and I cherish it.

You mentioned that you had a private question to ask. You can PM me with it if you like. If it's too personal, I'll tell you I'm not comfortable answering it, but I'll do my best to provide information.

My DH works for a company where they offer full benefits to domestic partners, same as DH and I get as a married straight couple. Health insurance, life insurance, adoption assistance, the list of benefits available is staggering. I am sure there are benfits we still don't know about because the booklet is so overwhelming!

Yes, gay couples would get tax breaks from the IRS if gay marriage was legal, but I don't really think that is something that straight couples need to be worried about. There are probably enough straight people getting divorced at any given time that it would offset the gay marriages as far as taxes go. ;)

I have lots of gay friends, and as far as I know, none of them were abused as children. The circumstances appear to be that they are just gay. I am just straight, but I am never asked to defend it or explain it.

InfernoGirl, I think you are wise to recognize that it is very difficult to know if your kids are gay or straight, so it is wise to err on the side of caution. I think it is PFLAG that has a slogan about being careful who you hate because it might be someone you love. I hope if my DS is gay he won't have any trouble coming out because he has many wonderful gay men in his life who have shown him that being gay is not bad or weird or shameful.

Ooooo :yay: - I pick Duck Boats.
I just did those last month for the first time - believe it. Big fun.
