What are some "good for you" snacks that I can tote in the parks? Fruit mushes, cheeses need to be cold...

What the heck can I bring that will not be full of salt and sugar and is totable??

Thank you for any and all suggestions, I'm lost on this one!

Blessings,
Emmy

First off I would invest in a 12 can collapsible cold cooler bag. I got mine at Sears on sale.

Then I would put 6 cans of cold soda in the bottom then one of those new flexable blue ice sheets, then I would throw in baby carrots, one of those english cucumbers that come in plastic and don't need peeled, and some cheese sticks and those new portable yogart sticks, a couple of apples, and then top it off with 2 cold water bottles layed on there sides.

Here are some ideas that hold up well and don't need refrigeration:

Granola bars
Raisins or other dried fruit like dates, figs, dried apples, etc.
Nuts and seeds
Pop-tarts (actually reasonably nutritious, especially lo-fat ones)
Breakfast cereal (either in single serve packs or small containers)

I'm sure I'll think of some others. I'll post again if I do.

I am a fan of string cheese. I usually put one in my pocket for a mid morning snack and have never had a problem with it going bad. I wouldn't wait till 4PM but a few hours without refrigeration won't hurt you.

Trail mix is good too. Fresh fruit I just buy in the parks. It's expensive but it is better than constantly filling up on sugary snacks.

Some of the things we always bring along are dried fruit and nut mix, granola bars, and those individual serving cups of applesauce or fruit cocktail.

We brought individually-packaged Peanut butter crackers, granola bars, pretzels. Kids loved having their own zippy-bags filled with trail mix!

Those milk & cereal bars are pretty good or the Special K bars are good and low in fat & calories. We don't lug around a cooler so we have to keep it to the non-perishable type of things. You could also carry one of the smallest Rubbermaid or Tupperware containers to keep pretzels or crackers from getting smushed!

It's already been mentioned, but baby carrots & string cheese are our family's park snack staples! We've never had an issue with the cheese (well partly because it doesn't last THAT long! :D)

We have also tossed the cheese into the freezer for about an hour before we leave for the park (while everyone's getting up/showered/dressed, etc.) - that works well also.

Another idea is to freeze grapes and put them in your back pack. You can put them in a ziploc container so they don't get squashed. We've taken fruit snacks, granola bars, apples, and crackers too.

I carry Quaker chewy granola bars with me everywhere! They are really good and low in fat!

This may sound like a kiddy snack to you, but the fruit rollups are also yummy!! ;)

My DS and I really like Nutrigrain muffin bars. I eat them mainly for breakfast, but they make a good snack too.

For any of you doing WW, these are only 4 points too.

southernwingz...have you visited the WISH board? Just noticed your post about WW! ;)

Granted I read about 10 of the DIS boards every day, but the WISH board is one of my favorites! It is a featured board, here on the DIS, where people share their experiences of their weight loss/exercise journey! It is a great support group! There are over 200 WISHer's on all different kind of programs. You will love it there!

Come over and tell them that I told you to join! ;) Here's a link... http://disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=59 Hope to see you on the WISH board! :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Thanks, Tiffany, for pointing out the WISH board to me. I went over there and told my little story and told them you sent me. I'm sure I'll see you around.

Raisins, applesauce in the plastic cups, granola bars, rice cakes, fruit roll ups, fresh fruit (keep in mind that you can NOT bring fresh fruit into the state of FL with you, it must be purchased there!), trail mix, Rice Krispies Treats, packages of cheese & crackers or PB & crackers.

I did not know that. Another no-no that I have done without knowledge of the rules. UGH!

I didn't know that either. However, I doubt that a Trooper is going to pull you over for having a bag of apples in your car!! :p

Fruit rollups and fruit snacks, though I love them, have a LOT of corn syrup. If you are truly looking for healthy (and not just "healthier than a candy bar"), go with dried fruit or fruit leather over fruit roll ups. Dried veggies are good too (wasabi peas....yummm.)

I'd recommend stopping one of two places (or both) - if you have a co-op near you, stop in. Lots of natural foods, including granola bars with fewer preservatives than the ones most people buy. Soy nuts, trail mixes, etc. Healthier cookies.

And a camping store - REI is good (and much is available on line). Nutrition bars can be good (but many have a LOT of carbs - so watch it if you are diabetic or boarderline - or just watching carbs). They will also carry trail mixes, and nuts. The food they sell is made for camping and hiking - so it should last the day at Disney.

No, but they randomly put up Ag checkpoints along the major routes into the state and inspect every vehicle that passes through. (All trucks and commerical vehicles, as well as anyone transporting certain hoofed stock must always stop)

They will seize your apples (or whatever contraband) and allow you to procede without it. It's illegal to bring in any type of citrus, and in addition to seizure you can face fines. To me it's not worth the hassle, I'd just buy it there.
