My dd's birthday is friday, I asked her teacher what I could bring in - she said snack is at 10:00, and asked if I could bring something healthy - she isn't crazy about cupcakes. Anyone have any ideas of something healthy that the kids would like?

Can you have peanuts? Peanut butter crackers? Otherwise, i have a recipe for a no egg, no dairy, no cholesterol cake.

Yes, they can have peanuts, none of the kids have any food allergies

My DD likes strawberries and cool whip.

I took strawberries in for her party last year and the kids gobbled them up.

vegetable tray. broccoli, cauliflower, and baby carrots with ranch dip.
fruit tray with cool whip.

what about the little cups of Trix Yogurt? Or the ones that come with the sprinkles (I forget the name).

I think it's great that you're trying to come up with a healthy treat.

I'm afraid it's been either cupcakes or doughnuts in DD's class so far this year - except on DDs B-Day.

DD absolutely loves cucumbers and asked if we could bring those for her treat. I just didn't see a class full of 2nd graders being too excited about that, and I didn't want DDs feelings hurt when they gave her a hard time over her choice of birthday treat. So I'm embarrassed to say I buckled to pressure and we did NOT go with the cucumbers.

We did yogurt and a fruit tray and DD still took some flack over that choice. :sad2:

BTW, we took cucumbers in when DD was star student and she was supposed to share her favorite things.
Very few kids even took any and one little guy who said he had never had them before but wanted to try one ended up gagging and making a mad dash for the bathroom.
Kind of sad.

Guess it's a good thing we didn't bring them for a birthday treat after all. :rotfl:

thanks for the ideas - I like the fruits and yogurts idea, maybe I'll put them together in a parfait - I just hope the kids will like it - 7 year olds would probably rather have a nice tasty cupcake over some fruits and nuts!!!!

Rice Krispie treats, one of the few items allowed at my DNiece's school. Although the strawberries and cool whip are a good choice too. :thumbsup2

For Halloween last year we did a "decorate a bagel" in Kindergarten. We brought in plain bagels and cream cheese tinted with food coloring, then used raisins and carrot pieces for the face. The kids LOVED it and it was very healthy. You could adapt it for a bday by using non-orange cream cheese...try your child's favorite color maybe?
Good luck!

We're not allowed to bring "junk food" to school anymore. It's some new Kansas law. My dd took grapes and cheese sticks to her 3rd grade class on her b-day. She said everybody but one kid thought it was great. I bought green, red and black grapes and put some of each into little snack bags. The kids called it grape salad!

At DS's class Halloween party the veggie tray with dip went just as fast as the sweets.

Other ideas: ants on a log, fruit kabobs (use coffee stirrers or straws), chocolate covered strawberries.

My kids would have loved the cucumbers!!!

I like the strawberries and cool-whip idea.

They have cheese shapes out now=stars/moons and things like that. My kids love cheese and crackers. Cupcakes are REALLY messy so that is probably why the teacher doesn't want them. Another thing our kids really liked at that age was the puff popcorn. You could send some large bags of that in with some fun Dixie Cups.

Does she really want something healthy or just not cupcakes because they tend to be very messy in the room and on the kids. If it is just the cupcakes she is not likeing, some less messy treats would be donut holes, rice krispie treats or even a giant cookie cake.

Banana bread or pumpkin bread. If you bake it as a loaf, you can cut the slices in half, they're easier for little hands to eat. You can also bake them as a muffin/cupcake shape.

Do not frost them though, then that turns them into a "cupcake". I am sure it's the frosting aspect that teachers don't like (very messy and too sugary). As long as you don't frost them, it's healthy. ;)

I do this all the time. Usually I do pumpkin bread because the kids all love it. I get asked for the recipe every time, by kids for their parents, or by teachers and parents. Trust me, this is a hit.

Any quick bread will do though: cranberry, banana (with or without mini chocolate chips in it), pumpkin, even date!

How about the mini bagles (bagalettes I think the frozen ones are called) I have done those with cream cheese and\or butter. The kids got to "frost" them and loved it.

Yes, she really wants healthy foods, she told us at back to school night about her policy and how the children should not come into class with chips, cookies, fruit snacks ect... this is her own policy, not the school's  .

You guys have come up with TOO many good ideas - it's funny I was just on the phone w/my mother and she suggested mini-bagels and grapes!! A few of you guys suggested that one and I think that's what I'm going to do. It's fairly easy, and everyone likes bagels and cream cheese - especially here in ny!!

Thanks for all the help!

Rice Krispie or Cheerio squares. Definitely no worse for you than Trix yogurt!!!!

Or peanut butter dough balls. (peanut butter, powdered milk, honey mixed and rolled in corn flakes or powdered sugar.)

This is lazy, but McDonald's sells the apple packs with caramel dip, without the Happy Meal. I get them all the time. :teeth:

This is one of my all time favorite healthy snacks.....and I make these ALL the time and nobody has a clue just how healthy and lowfat they are.

Take one box of chocolate cake mix....and 1 can of pumkin...that's it. Mix pumkin into cake mix..that's it! Nothing else gets added. Then make yourself some cupcakes. Bake according to directions on the box. I usually "frost" with cool whip free as well.

You really can't even taste the pumkin in the chocolate and the cool whip as frosting makes a very nice added bonus. I REALLY like this recipe with a carrot cake mix better...but the kids will love the chocolate and have no idea it is good for them too~~~
