Healthy, Healthy, Healthy!!!

My mom eats very healthy - almost no fat or salt, and some seafood so I have lots of experience finding healthy food at disney. The key is to always just ask for what you want and they will try to accommodate you. If they can't they will be up front and tell you. Even at character meal buffets, my mom orders for her dietary restrictions and she has had beautiful dishes of grilled salmon dry with plain grilled vegetables. We used to avoid buffets with her but now that we know she can be accommodated it has made a huge difference. My mom loves the food at Disney.

Here are our best successes:

Healthy Counter Service:

Yogurt parfait at Main Street Bakery, pineapple spears at Aloha Aisle for snack (though resisting the pineapple dole whip float may be tough), also fat free Edy's ice-cream at the Main Street ice cream parlor.

Fruit platter at flame tree at AK is big and yummy

Sushi at epcot - japan counter service, fruit smoothies at epcot were low fat (my mom looked at the ingredients)

Table Service

Kona Cafe - outstanding sushi

1900 Park Fare - ordered special for dietary restrictions and was very successful - this was where my mom go the grilled salmon.

California grill

My mother LOVED the healthy breakfast at CRT

My family really liked the Tusker House lunch buffet -- lots of salads, veggies and grains, and roasted meats. We all enjoyed it and didn't feel stuffed after the meal.

MK: Columbia Harbour House has a hummus and broccoli slaw sandwich on whole grain bread. It is very nice.
.
ooh that is my kinda lunch!

what a great thread. sometimes the reviews/menus of Disney food makes me feel a bit :scared1:. i'm all for treating myself on holidays but i also don't want to come home 10kg heavier. i knew there had to be SOME healthier options around.

I'm so glad to find some healthier alternatives! We are not doing the dining plan because there is no way my daughter would eat chicken fingers or cheese macaroni for 10 days! She would much rather split a salad and hummus and pita with me.

Keep all these good foods coming! More CS meals please!!!!

hhmmm...as far as a healthy treat, I'm all for the Dole Whip! I love ice crem, but the fat content makes you feel warmer afterwards and not real refreshed

At Epcot, I also think Sunshine Seasons is the way to go!

Also, the sushi in Japan is quick and DELICIOUS!

At Magic Kingdom, there is a noodle restaurant before you enter Tomorrowland that is wonderful! Youll be able to smell it all over Tomorrowland and parts of MainStreet...very good!

So everyone's always posting pics of the yummy, indulgent foods. I'd like to know the best places to find HEALTHY yummy food!

Have got ADRs at The Wave, Boma, Narcoosees & Wolfgang Puck for Jersey Week, so think I'm on the right track. Lots of seafood, whole grains & high fiber choices.

Was wondering what the best choices are for CS during the day? Looking for whole grain breads, low fat, high protein foods.

Over the past 2-3 yrs I had lost a good amount of weight and am now very health conscious when we go to WDW. My best tip to dine at pretty much "ANY" restaurant in WDW that doesn't offer too many healthy, lower fat, high protein options is to just go with a salad with either chicken or fish on it. Whether it's CS or TS many have salads of some kind. CS can be a bit more of a challenge because many of them have very limited selections.

However a few TS can be a bit difficult depending on the server...
We went to R&C in the UK back in April and they had the most delcious chicken salad salad. IT was so good that I made a ADR for our trip in August and much to my dismay they took it off the menu (I guess most people don't go to the UK for salad but for fish and chips, fried, fried, fried!, no, no, no...)

The server was not real cooperative when I asked if I could get a salad with a just a piece of grilled chicken. I said there has to be something "healthy" I can get. She said she'd have to ask the chef about the salad thing...meanwhile the people on the table next to me commented among themselves that they "couldn't eat healthy in WDW"...ok... Sorry but that's not an excuse for me. :sad2:

Well they ended up making the salad with the chicken and it was just ok, but I was disappointed over how much "trouble" it seemed to be and wondered if another server would have handled it differently. But, I still got my healthy lunch (after some not so necessary haggling!) So, even with some patience you can still get something healthy even with a little creativity, they should be able to accommodate you.:thumbsup2

Good Luck with that.

My child has a heart problem. Ordering any food for him is difficult at Disney World. I have written to Disney and have been contacted several times by Disney about this. They have responded by making at least one of the childrens elections on the menu healthy. I am sure that a lot of people have been angry about this! I mean come on.....

He can't eat Mac and Cheese, Pizza, and chicken nuggets.....period. I just ordered another adult meal that was healthy for him.

So, I make it a point that he has a heart problem before I order and they have been able to help me at most locations.

Everyone raves about the food at Disney, I find it to be very difficult to get anything healthy. They do try to accomodate me, and I am always greatful for this.

I think that while making reservations, I will make them note that we would like some healthy options while dining. Who knows if it would help:confused3

I second the Wave for really great salads and nice, portioned nicely ( NOT huge) meals.
Love their organic teas.
Their desserts come in little cups like 2 bites each so it's a treat- not a huge serving.

I have found that most table services will be more than happy to help you modify your meals to be a bit more healthy.

Fruit, fruit cups, are available at all 4 parks and DTD, carrot and celery packs are available too. Counter services almost all have salads. you can ask for dressing on the side. ( except in China- they kinda fuss at you:) :)

As far as kids meals go almost all table services have a healthy choice menu-
Example:50's prime time has grilled fish, rice pilaf and yoghurt parfaits
Grilled chicken strips, pasta and veggies, fresh fruit

Mama Melroses has grilled fish

Tutto Italia has griiled chicken on their menu for kids
Tonys at MK has grilled fish or whole wheat pasta primavera

At tables services ask to speak to a chef. Note on your ADR you have diet needs. There have been many times I have been made a meal that isn't on the menu at a table service
Counter services are a bit more tricky but you can ask for modifications on meals. you need to ask for a manager-I mean they can't change up a hamburger or hot dog:) but some have salads :)

Contacting the special diets team can be helpful when having a food allergy or diet issue. they can assist anyone in finding places that will help you with meals.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I try really hard to keep my sugar intake low, so although alot of the suggestions are low in fat/calories, they would still ignite my sweet tooth.

I've downloaded the WDWDine app on my ipod touch, so we can access all the menus while we're there. The more informed the better...

DD13 will be thrilled about the whole grain pasta at The Wave - she really tries to stick to only whole grains.

Sanaa has very healthy food choices.... it's Indian cuisine with an African flare, and it's very yummy. Overall very healthy vegetarian options.
