Health Inspector Report

I have been viewing some of the expanded reports, and an interesting thing is that each report states if the inspection was a routine inspection, or due to a complaint. The last 3 inspections at Chef Mickeys were from complaints - I guess from people that actually called the heath inspector due to being sick.(?) I've gotten sick at restaurants before, but never called the health inspector. Makes me wonder how many more people are getting sick and just deal with it like I did.

I think most people just deal with it, or assume it's a virus as it's hard to pinpoint unless actual tests are done, and even then it could be tricky, if you've eaten in several different restaurants.

I think those who called may have been very sick, or looking for some sort of compensation. The problem is that with buffets, you have disgusting adults/kids touching utensils and food and then spreading their germs to that food, so it doesn't necessarily mean that an employee passed it to the food, or a kitchen violation occured, but another guest could have done so when they served their own food.

The health inspectors have their job cut out for them in big places like Disney where so much food is served at multiple locations. I would suspect a lot of tracking is done in terms of inspections, compliance and complaints.

This thread is making me afraid of eating at other people's houses.

I can't count how many times I've been invited to a get together and left hungry b/c people put meat on the grill and just wipe their hands on a towel or salads are left out in the heat for hours. I could go on... I just don't get it. I haven't ate at my own mother's house in years b/c I'm afraid she'll kill my kids. I've seen her use the same cutting board for meats and vegetables and she's notorious for using a nasty sink sponge to wipe everything down. Bleck! Good thing I had home ec in school! And God forbid you say anything to her! Talk about offended....

You hit the nail on the head with that one -- food poisoning is a bit of a silent epidemic. Many people suffer the effects for a day or two and don't see a doctor or file a complaint. There are literally tens of millions of Americans who suffer food poisoning every year and never report it.

I find this thread very interesting as my 5 year old became violently ill the last time we vacationed at Disney World (Jan. 06). The only thing she ate that nobody else did was Ranch dressing from Cosmic Rays. Was it stored at the right temerature? Was it her hotdog that was contaminated or not cooked properly? We'll never know. What I do know is that we were going to take her to the ER if she did not improve. She got better after 12 hours of illness. I will be packing pepto bismol and pedialyte powder for our trip this August.

I read the inspection reports for our restaurants and I will not be eating any mashed potatoes at The Coral Reef.
From an inspection report:

10-05-1 Observed in-use utensil stored in unclean water at or above 135 degrees Fahrenheit.Mashed potatoes scoops stored in heavily soiled water, water had food debris and change of colour.

And it seems that the milk dispensers at Chef Mickeys have been written up multiple times.

I also checked the hotel inspection report for the Polynesian and it would seem that many ice machines have been written up, too.

bacteria love ice machines. they form a slimy layer in there and... well.. let's just say I never use ice from hotel ice machines.

she's notorious for using a nasty sink sponge to wipe everything down.

Your mother too? I am terrified of my mother's sponge. I always replace it when I visit, but I'm pretty sure within five minutes she's already used the new sponge on her entire apartment.

:cool1: My grandma is the same way, except not with a sponge but with her kitchen dishrag and towels. Ick ick ick. We visit her about twice a month, and the first thing I do is switch the towels and dishcloth, without her looking of course, as I don't want to get in trouble. ;) If she notices they are replaced, she'll become very upset and will say she just replaced them "xx" days ago. She'll also wipe hamburger hands (aka, hands with meat juice dripping off of them) on the SAME towel she dries her hands with after "washing" them (for like 5 seconds). I live in a constant state of fear that we will become sick. Actually, I spend the day with her yesterday. Last night I woke up several times with severe stomach cramps....hmmmm....

I think most people don't really think much of it and pass it off as, "Oh, I just have a bug".

WHAT? Seriously??? Ewww. That's beyond gross. I don't use hotel ice machines anyways....but eww. Now that makes me wonder if soda dispenser ice machines are any better? Please tell me yes. Or I may be drinking warm soda the rest of my life. Ugh. Sometimes I wish I could forget what I read! LOL!

Sorry... there have been a number of studies over the years where random samples are taken from fast food and convenience store soda machine ice makers and... well... we're talking nasty bacteria, including fecal coliform.

I think hotel ice machines are less likely to have fecal coliform -- fast food moreso. This is just a slightly educated guess, though. Hotel machines make their own ice, so you'll just get the bacteria that like wet, dark places.

The ice dispensers in fast food and convenience store sodas often have to be refilled by someone who carries the ice from the giant ice maker in the back or wherever over to the soda machine. And in that case, your ice will only be as clean as that guy is careful.

Fecal coliform??? Oh my gosh. I don't even want to know how that gets up in there. (Ok, the slightly morbid drawn to gross side of me wonders, but not enough to ask, thank you. ;))

Warm soda it is. Though that probably comes with its own risks, yes? Just like drinking warm tap water? Or is that just in my head? I'm so confused. :confused3 And feeling rather .

Oh man. This is so not good. If anything, you've just cured my semi-addiction to fountain soda pop. ;)

Now I'm thinking about my home fridge ice dispenser. Figuring out how to disinfect that entire system has just been added to tomorrow's to-do list.

If an employee with dirty hands -- or someone who doesn't obey the sign and washes after using the bathroom -- touches the ice bucket, you've got fecal coliform. It's not a bacteria that will show up on its own (however, there are other bacteria in ice dispensers beyond the fecal coliform).

I don't recall any specific research on the soda dispensers themselves. I suppose there are risks since anyone can touch them... although I don't see why anyone would, except by accident (hand brushes against it while inserting/removing the cup, etc.).

Ah, nevermind -- looks like there was a study that found fecal coliform in the dispensers, too. Here's CNN's report on it. This study was done in Virginia, but I don't see why it wouldn't apply elsewhere.

Ick!

When I worked for Coca Cola during college, we often had to go out on service repair calls to fix the fountain dispensers and let me tell you, those things can be very nasty. The syrup will build up and sour inside the lines that carry it from back in the kitchen up into the dispenser and out into your cup. The restaurant workers are supposed to run hot water through the lines periodically to keep them clean, but in my experience, most don't bother doing it, especially smaller mom and pop places. If you've ever gotten a fountain drink and it tasted funky, that is the sour syrup you are tasting. One place I will commend for doing an excellent job of keeping their soda dispensers clean is McDonalds. That's a big reason why a Coke from McDonalds tastes so much better than many places.

I think bean counters jump on any slight way to increase revenue and they need to know that if people are in the bathroom of their hotel they are NOT spending money!!!

I'm officially disgusted. This is one of those threads I wish I hadn't stumbled upon, but its like a car accident and I can't help but look. I'm headed for Disney in 11 days and got the dining plan for the first time. Last time we visited we stayed in a condo and cooked a lot of our own food, this time we are staying at CR, and I'm petrified to eat anything now. I admit, I'm a clean freak and super paranoid about my own kitchen and food and eating out was going to be hard enough as it is (I rarely ever do in day to day life) that now I'm going to have all these nasty restaurant violations in the back of my head. Fingers crossed for a safe and healthy trip... Wonder how safe those turkey legs are.... Cuz man have I been craving one lol

And they found rats at Chefs de France :scared1:

Doesn't surprise me. . .we saw a huge one (which we promptly named Ratatouille) at the BWI quiet pool one evening after dark. There were 3 people in the hot tub and they had no clue the varmint was running just outside the shrubs not 3 feet from them. :scared1:

and while we're at it - the same thing goes for beer lines - that's why I now get beer from a bottle instead of "on tap" at many places!

and I thought I had posted about ice in Fast Food places earlier - or about the lemons...
