Heads Up on gate checking large strollers.

That weight limit would be hard for those with double or larger strollers and they are probably the ones who need the strollers the most. Luckily I only have one little one now and we only travel with our Britax Blink which fortunately doesn't weigh much.

Thanks- I just sent it to my friend that flies on American every few months with her BOB stroller. She is not very happy right now!

ugh that stinks! we have our second on the way and i'm looking into double strollers. the citi mini seems to get great reviews but it's 25 lbs!

stinks!

My son is 3 and is on the autism spectrum and we travel with our baby jogger. We have only flown AA twice but now I will never use them. I do not see the need to buy another stroller.

For those now looking for a compact, lightweight double, I'm pretty sure the Peg Perego Aria would fit the bill. ( Double check, but I seem to remember it being well under 20 lbs.)

WOW we fly American alot and I don't know what I'll do. My Joovy sit and stand is over 20 lbs and I simply can't do the airport with out it for my 2 and 4 year old. We often have eithor long or really tight connections and I can't imagine doing eithor with out the stroller. Not sure what on earth we will do now.

I was just talking to my mother about this and her first response was "I guess a lot of families are going to be taking the special cart". I'm pretty sure I would have.

I'm glad my kid is older and he doesn't need our big fancy stroller any more (and we did really "need" it as it helped out with medical issues). I just can't imagine doing the traveling we did, and dealing with this. I guess our first first step would have been never flying American (and its usually my first choice).

this was my thought about families in general!

I only need my umbrella stroller for one in the airport now.

and if you want to take your jog stroller on vacation - and NEED it in the airport what are you going to do?

I think they will be revising that policy - there are going to be tons of complaints!

DBIL has 20 month old tiwns who are finally starting to walk their stroller which is a Graco Duo Gilder is 39 Lbs, it's the only stroller they have and can't afford to buy a lighter stroller. I hope the 20 lb limit is flexible as far as multiples go since there aren't many strollers for multiples that are affordable and lighter. I don't know much about strollers but other then for multiples the 20lb weight limit seems perfectly reasonable though. If I have to pay for my luggage I don't see why someone who has a 50lb+ stroller shouldn't have to pay to check it. But since DH and I don't have a kid yet I guess my views are a little different.

I wouldn't count on them being flexible with double strollers. I would bet they are the biggest problem. When we flew down in nov we were delayed getting our stroller off the plane because a double stroller opened up and they couldn't get it through the door. No one knew how to collapse it. I have also seen a few o those chariot strollers on buses. And even though the owner could have driven I would guess at least one flew and those things are huge and don't fold. I was surprised they let it on the bus. I think it's a case of when it started people had small strollers and now people travel with monsters (myself included I have an uppababy vista which is 18 pounds). I guess if your stroller to too heavy look into a cheap one for the airport and then rent while down there.

I have to say I would actually pay to gate check my stroller. As I said my son is on the autism spectrum and having his personal stroller works much better for us and it prevents meltdowns and gives him his safe place.

I am not a fan of AA and only fly them when we travel to Arkansas to visit family but I will fly another carrier now. I do believe that a lot of airlines will not follow suit with this one because I think the backlash will be huge.

In this case your stroller is a mobility aid and they would consider it just like a wheelchair. ( just an FYI)

The other issue that bothers me is now the strollers will be treated like regular luggage, thrown around, traveling on conveyer belts, heavy bags piled on top, etc. I wonder what the damage rate will be?

Probably even higher than it is now. We've seen strollers damaged very badly that were gate-checked; can't imagine what they would have looked like if they had been sent through with the regular stuff. Although, the airlines don't compensate you for damaged strollers/car seats that are gate checked, anyway. Part of the tag you get when you gate check it states that they are not responsible for any loss or damage, and they really mean it. When they ruined our car seat (that was not FAA approved, so it had to be checked), they refused to pay for any damages because we checked it at our own risk.

That's why i love my MacClaren Truimph. 11.5 lbs! It's so light and thankfully DD doesn't like to fully recline ever.

i would think that there would be exceptions for disabled/ medical reasons.
