A vet was just interviewed on our morning news and she said studies have shown that dogs and cats who are fed premium quality pet food live on average 2 years longer. Guess that's bad news for my kitties and puppies who are eating Old Roy & Special Kitty from Wal Mart.

We feed our animals Nutro, and they do very well (my cat was 19 before she passed away!). They have very shiny fur (and it is soft, no greasy feeling) and are healthy. Also, makes for a nicer litter box cleaning experience (as well as the back yard).

Premuim food is the way to go, IMO.

I feed my kitty Science Diet. He used to get horrible UTIs, but ever since he has been eating this food he has not had another single one.

My babies eat IAMS (which they finally sell at Wal-Mart!) and they do wonderfully on it. Its expensive but is very worth the extra cost.

My vet told me this years ago. My critters never eat anything but premium quality food.

I have an uncle who nearly lost a dog to malnutrition until the vet told him to quit feeding it Old Roy. I cringe everytime I'm in Wal-Mart and see someone with a jumbo bag of Old Roy in their cart.

Ours get Science Diet for dry, and Nutro Max for moist, and they do great on it. :)

Our new kittens are eating IVD dry kitten, and we're slowly transitioning them to the Nutro Max kitten for moist as well.

When we purchesed our current dog the breeders told us he needs to be fed IAMS for at least the first 2 years of his life. We decided at that point to always feed him IAMS. The other plus is that the better food produces less waste, and in a sheppard, that makes a big difference;).

I'm so glad that I read this post! I've always fed my "baby" Science Diet and was thinking of switching to Dog Chow or some other cheaper brand. Now I won't. Thanks for posting this!!

Plus a cup of "stew" I make just for them. Its made of carrots, green beans chicken or salmon. They love it and their coats are like velvet.

Thanks. Our cats eat Iam plus kitten chow (yes they get a choice LOL). they seem to like Iams better...

Our 3 dogs just switched to Canidae and love it! We used to feed Nutro Natural Choice.

Your pet's coat and general health will be better on a premium food and while the cost of the *bag* may be more, in the end it is usually less or the same as feeding the low grade stuff. Generally you feed less of the "good" stuff as it has less "fillers" in(it's the "fillers" that create more waste as the body doesn't need them).

I just wish they sold bigger bags of the Iams kitten chow. :( We tried to switch to adult and they threw up :( As long as the kitten chow isn't hurting them we'll stick with it.

I feed my guys either ProPlan or Nutro. They seem to love it...And true the premium stuff costs more and is an "extra" trip to buy it, it makes for a LOT less waste.

My kitties are also on either ProPlan or MaxCat. I try and stick with something for Urinary Health as my one cat has really smelly urine...but my guys all love the good stuff.

my 2 german shepards eat ol'roy and other wal-mart brands....and about half of all our table scraps:eek:

but they are pretty healthy, i dont know how long they're gonna live obviously but ..my cats eat IAMs....i dont like them more theyre just at a different house:p

I feed our two Standard Poodles either Steve's Freeze Dried Patties (all natural) or Animal Food Servies Freeze Dried Patties (all natural) for breakfast. Dinner -- Bravo frozen meat (raw diet).
Their bisquits are all natural Wellness Dog Bisquits or Wysong Dog Bisquits.

Water -- spring water only.

I'm a fanatic as to what food they eat and water they drink. No chemicals or preservatives for them. They go to a nutritional veterinarian

My husbands says the boys (Poodles - Sebastian & Winslow) eat better than we do.

We feed our cats a mixture of various Purina dry cat foods with a perscription Purina urinary food. Our vet swears by Purina brand foods along with Science Diet (which the cats detest).

Bucth and Dracula both eat Ol'Roy and Special Kitty respectly. That's also counting the table scars Butch gets as a treat

Well that's good news for my doggie (who is spoiled by the Three Dog Bakery), but my cats are so picky that they refuse to eat the "better" stuff!!! Strictly Purina catchow (which thankfully hasn't been reported as a Menu Foods company, but I'm still skeptical)...and if I change it, they pee on my couch...such lovely litle kitties ;) And just a warning to those who use IAMS...my dog used to eat that, up until I found out that they are partnered with a company called Menu Foods and participate in horrible research experiments subjecting their lab cats and dogs to torturous studies which result in injury, illness (both physical and mental), and death. We use ProPlan for our dogs. It works well.
