My DD6 has autism & her main sensory issue is auditory. Her grandfather had some noise reduction headphones (for working with machinery) that he gave her to wear on the 4th for fireworks & she actually watched them without crying for the first time! I was wondering if anyone can tell me where to get some kid-sized, noise-reduction headphones w/o a cord (speakerless) that I could take with us to WDW on 7/31 so she can enjoy fireworks. It would also help her on a couple of rides that have noises that upset her (like the bells on her favorite ride, the carousel). Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

We bought Noise Cancelling headphones at Dick's Sporting Goods in the hunting/fishing section (like the kind you would use at a target range). they weren't cheap- like $30.00- and they weren't child-sized, but they work great! Just a thought!

Some people swear by BOSE headphones, but at nearly $100/pair, that is out of the budget for now!

My DD has child sized pink ones and my son has child size red ones (they look great w/ mickey ears). We got them at a local hunting store (what can I say, apparently in TX people take their little ones hunting...) but I bet you could also find them online; check a hunting store like Cabella's, and search under "ear protectors" each will have a decibel rating, look for the highest you can find I've seen them 18 and up, but found 25's for DS.
Hope this helps!

Nicole,

Thank you so much! Based on your post I was able to change what I was searching for & found a pink pair of Peltor muffs at Amazon for only 13.50! They have a NRR of 22....is that good? They were well-reviewed, so I think they'll be fine. They look like a miniature, pink version of what her grandad had last week for her...perfect! Thank you again for your help!!

My 9 year old DS also has autism and audiotry sensory issues. We just returned from Disney. He had some swim ear plugs he wore but I wish we had had better ear protection. MANY of the rides were loud and ques could be noisy. He wore his ear plugs for parades, shows and on all the rides. There were still times that he covered his ears because the noise was still too loud.

Have a wonderful time! :thumbsup2

Our DS 10 is also autistic with auditory sensory issues. God bless earphones -they have opened our world to all new experiences such as fireworks, parades and church.

The only suggestion I can add is to make sure they will fit in your bag or you are able to clip them on the bag. Carrying earphones around all day gets old.

Wishing you magical memories and pixie dust on your trip. :cloud9:

There is a company named Peltor that makes kid sized noise reducing headphones that are affordable and in fun kid colors. You can buy from their website or online from amazon.

Also, Walmart's sporting good area, carries some "shooting headphones", made by Winchester. They are about $15 and work well.

Our dd with autism seems to prefer both of these over the pair we bought her from Dick's, though our dd does have a large noggin, closer to an adults (we got her the line green adult sized Peltors though and not the cute pink or blue child sized ones.) She also seems to enjoy the pressure on her head that these provide as it soothes her as well.

I think we got ours at Home Depot. They reduce noise quite a bit (workers use them with weed eaters, mowers, etc) and they have a radio built into them. DS used to use them in the school cafeteria and they work really good.

I think Peltors pink are the ones DD has; if they are, they fold into almost nothing to go into a bag when not needed; and DD does fine w/ the 22 db rating. Just keep them close at all times; you never know at Disney when something loud is going to start quite near you. Also, DD likes the pressure and it just became a part of our ride "routine". Have a great time!
