Looking forward to a week at VWL starting Monday. This is our home resort, but it has been several years since we've stayed there. I just love the decorations for Christmas. We have AP's but am looking forward to spending some time just relaxing at VWL.

I do have one question - seems like I remember a path from WL to Fort Wilderness. Am I remembering this correctly? If so, where does it begin? I told DW I'd like to walk over there one morning. We've never spent much time in Fort Wilderness and I'd just like to look around some.

I will post all my pictures on Flickr when we return.

What about a carriage ride or golf cart rental at the fort?

There are two paths that I take from the WL over to FW. I've tried to highlight them both in this picture. The green path is probably the more "popular" route, which starts over by the bus stop and wraps around W Wilderness Rd. This path is popular for runners, bikers and walkers alike. The Red path is a little more obscure, and starts over by Teton Boat & Bike Rentals. This is a "nature trail" which starts behind the bike rental facility and wraps around the shores of Bay Lake. This path is mostly sand, whereas the other path is pavement/concrete, so depending on which one you choose, make sure you have the appropriate footwear.

So excited for you guys! So many cozy spots at WL, and I think Artist Pointe is one of the best restaurants. Enjoy your trip!

You are lucky people! We won't go till February. We love VWL.

We look forward to your pictures.

Have Fun!

You can also take a boat from WL/VWL to Fort Wilderness.

It is our home resort also and we took a 9 year hiatus from staying there until last December. We had a wonderful room and a wonderful stay! I hope you do too!

As Andrew says, both paths are popular, but we prefer the red lakeside path as it's quieter and more natural. I've run both many times over the years, and each covers about a mile one way. What the map doesn't show is that instead of hanging a right and hooking up with the green (paved) trail, you can continue paralleling the lake and will wind up coming into the FW compound via a CM parking lot. I've often seen deer and other wildlife in that last stretch before the parking lot. Enjoy our favorite resort! We've not been back for over a year and not scheduled to stay there for at least another year. Sigh.

Thanks for the directions to the paths. May take one over to FW and the other back (or take the boat back). DW is in training for a 5K in two weeks and this may be a good way for her to get in some training time.

I had read that the path along the lake was being used for site work materials for the pool refurb going on and since they are still working on it there's a possibility that it is blocked off. But there is still the path along the roadway (which only has Disney traffic on it so it's generally very peaceful too).

I thought I'd read as much, too, but couldn't say for sure. Certainly, it is worth noting; however, you are correct that even the paved trail is largely peaceful. I've often run it and encountered only a few people or sometimes none at all. :)
