Hi everyone. My boys and I are flying down to Disneyland from Canada on Saturday morning and wouldn't you know it, I am sick. I have a terrible cold with sinus pain and can't breathe at all through my nose. I am so worried about how painful the flight is going to be and don't know what to do. Any advice?

The one time I flew with a sinus infection was quite painful. Is there any way to reschedule your trip? If not, you'll need to take something that will cut down on the sinus inflammation (don't know what works for you, but things like Sudafed sometimes does the trick). There are steroid based prescriptions that can help as well. Good luck!

Sudafed and nasal spray. I've flown a few times with sinus infections / ear infections and while painful it can be done. Are you on antibiotics?

The trip can't be rescheduled. The flights are non refundable and the hotel was prepaid. I am not on any antibiotics currently but am going to step out of work today for a bit to go to see a doctor. Hopefully he says I will be okay but I am still extremely worried because I have some sinus pain.

I get a ton of sinus infections, unfortunately. Mucinex is a key part of my arsenal. It's an expectorant, and will help thin out the gunk. An anti-inflammatory will also help cut down on any swelling, which should help it drain more easily. If you want to add a decongestant, there's Mucinex D.

Hope you get some relief!

Few thoughts:

1. Flying with a sinus infection can be VERY painful and in some cases dangerous to your health. You definitely want to see a doctor, ask for meds, and get the okay to fly.

2. Flying while sick is just an invitation to all those unexpecting people flying with you to get sick. It's not fair to any of them if you are not on some form of antibiotics. Please consider that. They have families, jobs, vacations, and lives too.

3. Disneyland is a huge place where lots of germs can just be shared amongst strangers at every turn. Please consider #2 in reference to all the people at Disneyland as well.

4. Did you purchase trip insurance?

I hope your doctor can give you something and you feel great very soon!

Entex LA is an OTC sinus med which is amazing. I would also start using a saline spray and buy some Earplanes, which will help balance the pressure in your ears and sinuses. I have chronic sinusitis and often fly with a sinus inflammation. Not fun. Do try to get to a doctor ASAP. Sending you a prayer for good health. Have fun in Disneyland:thumbsup2

Have you ever used a sinus rinse? While gross and uncomfortable it really does help. As soon as I feel one coming on, I use it twice a day and I usually prevents it. If you've already got it, this may help it go away sooner.

A few years ago my Dr. refused to give me antibiotics and told me to use the sinus rinse instead. At the time I was less than pleased but I'm glad she did. I don't get them anymore because I stop them before they get too bad.

Oh, and do it in the shower. Less of a mess that way;)

I really would not recommend trying that if she is already congested. I find it to be very effective at preventing congestion, but once you're stopped up it's really awful and can just make things worse.

sudafed, specifically the old style with pseudoephedrine is a good decongestant. Antibiotics do NOT work on everything!!! colds are viruses and antibiotics cannot do anything to viruses. They only work on bacterial infections and your doctor would be able (hopefully) to see what your specific problem is.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Just left the doctor and he gave me some antibiotics and told me to take some over the counter stuff. Hopefully all goes well tomorrow because my kids are so super excited!!

Ugh, I'm so sorry! My kids are sick right now and I'm doing everything I can to not get it too. I hope you feel better soon.

I used to get awful sinus infections. What always helped me was a combination of ibuprofen for the pain and Sudafed (the real stuff behind the counter, not the stuff you can get on the shelf). That should help you get through the worst of it. I hope you feel better in time for a magical trip!!!

Totally :thumbsup2

I am glad you saw the doctor! I have flown with sinus infections and I find the best thing to cut down on the congestion is mucinex. If you start taking it now you will be amazed at how much crud you can blow out of that stuffy nose before you board tomorrow!

You will have been on antibiotics for 24 hours give or take and not contagious so that is very good.

As for infecting others, when you have non refundable flights and hotels I do believe 99.9% of all people would do exactly as you are and go on that trip! Thankfully your antibiotics will kick in and keep you from infecting anyone but regardless very few people can afford to lose that kind of money not to mention the disappointment to their kids. Getting infected with germs is a fact of life when any of us go anywhere in public.

Have a great trip!:)

OP glad you saw the doctor and I hope you get some relief before you go!! Have a great trip!
I also agree with the above. I don't know a single person who would cancel a trip because of a cold type of illness. There is too much at stake for most people to cancel. Just do your best to contain your germs and that's all anyone can do! I am going to DL tomorrow with a cold. I'd never dream of cancelling! I'll cover when I cough and sneeze, use sanitizer and refrain from breathing on anyone ;-)

Thanks for the support!! I agree that flying or vacationing while sick is not ideal for me or other people around me but when you save for something like this and you have very excited children a cold isn't going to stop me from going.

I would still do others a favor on the flight and wear a mask to prevent any germs from spreading. It's just common courtesy.

I agree. Like you, others on the plane may have been saving for their trips and have spent a great deal of money as well. If you can wear a mask to possibly prevent ruining someone else's trip, that'd be courteous thing to do.
