I feel for you!! I went through this with five kids and it was sheer horror!!
I used the non toxic type shampoo, vacuumed the entire house, did the bagging of the stuffed animals and dolls, washed every inch of clothing and bedding I could find, threw away all of the girls headwear. soaked all the combs and brushes in hot water. I tried using the regular lice shampoo but found that even though I left the shampoo in for exactly the time specified on the box, alot of the bugs that I combed out were still moving. I did everything exactly as directed. I found that the nontoxic stuff was much thicker and helped remove the lice eggs much easier. I did this three weeks in a row. I started in the morning and I am not kidding when I say it was nighttime when i finished with the last child. I hope I never have to go through it again. Just know you are not alone. sending hugs your way I did most of the above and finally went to wal-mart and got a robbi-comb, best 25.00 spent. After the shampoo, picking, i used the comb every day when dd came home from school, and that finally worked. wash all the bedding coats, etc. lice is VERY nervewracking thing to deal with!!!! good luck and don't give up-you'll get the little buggers!

I have gone thru this with two DD (6 & 8). They both have thick long hair that is to their waist. When I first discovered them I did not know what they were. But boy it did not take me long to figure it out. I went crazy over it. My husband said that I was taking it too far. I wish that someone had told me this......you are NOT a failure as a mother and you are NOT a failure if you do not get rid of it the first try. We used NIX and RID and vinegar. Like I said, we went thru this for 60 days. Since their hair is so long it took forever to comb thry their hair and pull the eggs out. The 2nd time we contacted them within the 60 days I cried. Both my girls cried because I was crying and said "Mommy, we will cut our hair if that is what you want." Of course I did not want them to cut their hair unless they wanted too. I finally went to the Dr and he said to use the over the counter stuff again. We did ,as well as rinsed their hair with straight white vinegar. After that I found the answer.....In my daughters brown hair as I was combing it I dipped a comb in RED KOOL AID. I mixed a pack with water and made it very concentrated. As I combed thru it the eggs would absorb the color and I could actually see them. It made the job so much easier. I combed thru her whole hair from her scalp to the ends of her hair. After I was finished with applying the kool aid I went back to where I started and I could see the eggs and pull them out. I felt so much better about the situation. I could actually see what I was doing. I feel sorry for anyone who has to go thru this because it is very stressful but here are some hugs and pixie dust!! I can't thank everyone enough for their replies and hugs and everything. I truly appreciate it. Keeping our fingers crossed the last two days my daughter has been nit and lice free!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going through the same thing with my 3 daughters right now. I suspect the preschooler brought it home, but the 5th grader was the worse effected. My heart goes out to you because I know exactly what you are going through. Guess what - I also ended up with it and needless to say my husband was no help.

I do have a question, what does the mayo or olive oil do and does it so anything to the eggs or nit's. Is it hard to wash out the next day?

Just reading this post just makes me well.....itch . As a Teacher Assistant in an elementary school we deal with the little critters quite often.

I've had to treat only a couple times years ago and Nix worked for me. I treated everyone and everything in my house and car with success.

As a precautionary measure and possible remedy with less damage to the hair, I use Helene Curtis Cholesteral Treatment whenever I feel the need. Just glob ALOT on dry hair, no need to scrimp (it's good for the hair), put on a shower cap and hang out (I cook dinner, clean-up, vaccum, do laundry or relax) I leave on as long as possible, longer IS better. Then with a lice comb (any drug store carries). I sit on edge of tub (it's a bit messy) and comb and comb. Then I shower. Hair feels great and can be used often.

My understanding is....The goop suffocates the live lice and greases up the hair (so to speak) so that any eggs can be combed out.
