I was reading the news paper the other day and found out one of my good friends brother has been in a bad plane wreck.

Article:

A birthday celebration at the Spartanburg Downtown Airport turned tragic Saturday afternoon when a small plane went down, killing a 14-year-old boy and the pilot. Two other teen-agers were injured.

Authorities said other members of the party, including relatives, stood helplessly on the ground watching the aircraft’s descent and the resulting fire just after 5 p.m.

A couple who live across the street from the runway ran to help, taking three fire extinguishers to fight the flames.

“I’ll never forget the sound of that man begging us to help the children. We held the fire back as long as we could, but it took over,” Raymond Cross said.

Cross and his wife, Juana, watched emergency crews at a distance for several hours as the Piper Cherokee with its burned cabin clung to the 25-foot drop-off as if it had tried to taxi down the hill. The right wing had been sheared off and lay several feet away.

“All I ask of God is to let the others be all right,” Mrs. Cross said.

Alison Cocoros, chief investigator for the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, identified the victims as Mark Paul Landry of 138 West Forest Drive and John Henry Orr Jr., 68, of 1606 Middlecreek Road, Afton, Tenn.

Injured was the pilot’s grandson, Kyung-Saun Orr, who underwent surgery in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and was in critical condition, said Spartanburg police Capt. Jennifer Kindall.

Kito Buono, who walked away from the wreckage, was treated for injuries believed to be non-life threatening, she said.

The Crosses watched Buono free himself and limp away from the burning plane. “He was just holding his shoulder,” she said.

The plane went down after some members of the group had returned from a flight, and a second group took off but had to circle back to the airport off Kensington Drive, Cocoros said.

Cross said he heard a plane that was too close to his house on Airport Road. He was on a ladder outside installing vinyl siding and looked up in time to see the plane go down.

“At first, I thought, ‘What’s that fool doing?’ Then I saw the wing touch the runway. The plane tipped and caught fire,” he said.

Spartanburg Public Safety personnel with the assistance of the Arkwright and Roebuck fire departments arrived and began trying to put out the fire and free the other passengers. Kindall said firefighters managed to pull Kyung-Saun Orr from the wreckage.

Cross said he wished the airport had its own ambulance and fire department on site.

“I’m not God and I am not saying I know what’s best, but I think if it had not been for the fire, the others would have survived this,” he said.

Public Safety Director Tony Fisher said witnesses and emergency personnel exhausted all means to assist the people in the plane and were to be commended for responding so promptly and without regard to their own safety in an effort to help.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were notified and expected to send agents to the scene this morning as efforts continued to determine the cause of the crash. The wreckage remained intact and guarded by police officers.

Kindall said Orr and his wife, who was not in the plane at the time of the crash, were visiting Spartanburg for the family gathering. Members of the group said Orr was a retired truck driver who had earned his pilot’s license about four years ago, she said.

Details on Kyung-Saun:

His brain has swollen and his head is now three times the size it was. They had to amputate his arm to above his elbow and they might have to amputate one of his legs. Both legs are broken and he may have fractured his face. Last but not least his BAD burns.

So please be in prayer for him and his family!
