:sad1: The assistant principal in NY that had the swine flu has died. He was 55 years old.
May he rest in peace.

That's a shame..:( I wonder if his chances would have been any better had he seen a doctor sooner? (NOT blaming the victim AT ALL - just wondering as I thought I read there was a delay of several days before he sought medical help..) From what I understand, medication ASAP (in some cases) can prevent this flu from ending in fatalities..) I feel so bad for his family - and his students.. :sad2:

I have serious underlying health conditions.. If I should develop any symptoms whatsoever that feel like the flu - or just don't feel "right" - I won't hesitate to high-tail it to my doctor.. Having said that, I am not concerned to the point where I'm not going out among other people or anything of that nature..

Come fall/winter, I think this thing is going to hit the front pages again..

I haven't been following any specific cases. Was he from the first school in NY that had H1N1 cases?

Did he have other medical issues as the other US death cases have?

I could be wrong, but I don't think so.. I think it was from a more recent outbreak in another NY school..

And OT, but why does Illinois have soooo many cases, especially compared to TX & CA --- the largest states bordering Mexico?

So sad. My mom has copd and other health proplems from years of smoking. She has not smoked for 6 years now. But when she gets the flu we have to seek medical help as soon as we can. Any flu can be life threatning to her.

Well we know that most of the cases in NY had something to do with kids going on spring break to Mexico.. But when I look on the cdc site - and the numbers for each state - there's no rhyme or reason to it..:confused3 Wouldn't you think Florida would have a heck of a lot more because of so many people traveling there? It's really strange..

Illinois & Wisconsin top the list for # of cases. They aren't even the largest states. I wasn't aware Illinois had a large Mexican population. I usually think CA, AZ, NM, & TX. Who knew? :confused3

But the people traveling to Florida were probably not visitors from Mexico. They were more than likely spring breakers from the US.

Luckily, our state's spring break was in March. What about IL?

That's so sad :(.

Wisconsin's Hispanic population has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 10 years. BUT ... I don't think that's the reason why we see so many cases here in WI. I think it's more of a case of reporting the flu and local testing. Our state was given permission to test our own cases and the number of positives cases went through the roof!

I think the skewed #s are mostly because many places aren't testing. I posted on an earlier thread, about being sick. I was pretty darned sick. Went to the hospital, lots of oxygen and several rounds of breathing treatments. I was never tested. The ER doc said the CDC was really asking for testing only on the REALLY bad-off cases. So those that die, or nearly die will get tested.

SO I would conclude that many, many more people than they think have the swine flu. If that is, in fact, true, this is killing/hospitalizing a waaaaaaaaaaay LOWER % of those afflicted than they'd thought.

ETA: SO sad about the principal. I still don't think schools need to be closing, unless that school has a huge % out sick. But this was really sad!

I live in NYC very close to JFK, and after hearing about the man's death, I'm starting to be concerned. The news is saying that the virus may be mutating and becoming stronger.:confused3

I feel very bad that he died from this virus. I was starting to feel better about this flu and then more cases in my city have gotten me worried again.

No reason to say "There may have been complications", when there weren't any other than gout, his son is right about that too..
-----------------
Just wanted to add that my stepdaughter's DH has gout - episodes that have become so severe, he's had to be hospitalized several times on a morphine drip for the pain.. (People tend to think of gout as "no big deal"..)
His doctor has told him that he needs to take extra precautions - in regards to this flu or any other flu because of his gout.. I don't know "why" - that's just what he was told by his doctor..

My DD and her family just returned from a trip at a friends timeshare down in the Catskill Mountains.. It was a "family reunion" type thing - with approximately 30 adults and children - who all live either in the NYC area or the areas of Long Island - where there have been confirmed cases.. (None of whom have been sick - or were showing any signs of being ill..) By the time they got home last night my DGD (10) was complaining of feeling ill - stomachache, sore throat, headache, etc..:sad2: Could be nothing - or it could be something - considering who she has spent the last 4 days with (DD and DGD went down Wed. night and her DH went down Friday night).. If DGD still wasn't feeling well this morning, DD was going to keep her home from school and call her pediatrician.. Better to be safe than sorry.. Hopefully it's nothing (NY is one of the states that received the kits to do their own testing rather than waiting for confirmation from the CDC).. If it's "any" kind of flu, they can't come up here for Memorial Day weeked - unless they stay down in their trailer and don't come in contact with me.. I have serious health problems and the flu (any kind) would be very serious for me.. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that it's just some other sort of "bug"..

Again - I think come fall/winter - we're going to see this in many more people..
