My poor son broke his arm on the last full day of school the end of May. He had a cast on for 6 weeks after that and didn't get to go swimming for quite a while. Luckily, he got his cast off the day we left for two weeks in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming.

So today, I got a call from Day Care about 4:15. He tripped over some blocks and he hurt the same arm. We thought it might only be bruised, but he was really complaining about it, so we took him to the ER.

Sure enough. He broke his right arm again - only 3 months later. But in a different spot, just inches above the old break nearer the wrist. He gets a cast put on it on Monday; he's got a splint cast on it for the weekend.

School just started this past Monday, too. And we leave for WDW in about 6 weeks from today. I hope he gets the cast off before we leave. I'd hate for him not to get to swim at TL.

I think his feet are getting too big for his body and it makes him a bit clumsy.

How old is your son? You mentioned Day care, so I'm assuming he's young.

Not to worry you but I suggest you take him to his regular doctor and ask them to do a "bone density" scan on your son. It shouldn't hurt him at all. I know kids break bones all the time, but you want to rule out any sort of weakness that his bones may have, including a calcium deficiency.

Keep us posted.

He just turned 11 and goes to after school care at his summer day care place. I will ask his Orthopedic Doc to see if he might need the bone density scan. We told him that he's going to have to start eating vegetables now, so he won't break any more arms.

But he loves his milk. Several glasses a day.

Does he drink whole milk or skim milk(non-fat). Skim milk has more calcium than whole milk. Also, and I can't believe I'm saying this, iron is good like in liver (ick), kale, cherries.

I hope everything checks out with him.

Keep us posted.

We daughter just broke her arm for the second time, and my son has done it also.

Don't worry it happens! At least ours were a few years apart, and not immediately after.

when I broke my arm a few years ago I requested a waterproof cast and it was so nice to be able to get it wet when I got itchy.

You might ask your ortho about one, just in case!

I read the title of your post, and I assumed it was a non-spoiler title for a Michael Phelps thread. I'm on the West Coast, so when he did win tonight, I thought, "oh I already knew he won because I saw it on the DIS." Now I see the little sad smilie :(

I am sorry about your son. A good thing about young bones is that they heal quickly!

I'm sorry! My dd gets her cast off on wednesday and this is one of my fears that with school and soccer practice starting, she will injure it again! That's a phone call I really don't want to receive either. Hope it's healed before your WDW trip.

That title would have been "He did it again -- and again -- and again....:bounce: "

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. He slept very well last night, so maybe this one won't be as bad. We did as the Ortho Doc about a waterproof cast last time as we were just entering summer vacation time. But he said that he really didn't recommend them. And he has had problems with them.

It must be very hard having a broken arm and then breaking it again in three months :(

hmm I'd press the issue on the waterproof cast find out what kind of problems....mine was great and I've had both. The only difference was the liner they wrap your arm with before they put the shell on.

It's neoprene and u just have to be careful to dry it good and a cool shot hair dryer does the trick!! It really does make it a LOT easier to tolerate.

I really don't believe this "drink milk" thing really works for bones. I believe it is just PR put out by the Milk Industries. You can get calcium from other foods.

I knew a lady who drank 6-8 glasses of milk a day her whole life. She was so humped over from her bones being bad she died just last month. She died because she could no longer breath because of her condition.

ahhh another not milk fan :) people are always lecturing me when I say my son doesn't drink milk.

I just wanted to add that magnesium is nesessary for calciun absorption, ideally in a 1 to 1 ratio. However your average cow's milk has little magnesium so you body can't absorb the calcium efficiently.

I reciently read a study that showed that the countries that drank the MOST cow's milk also had the highest rates of bone loss. I'm not 100% sure the opposite was true but I know the country with the lowest rates of bone loss and osteroprosis had some of the lowest cow's milk consumption.

To the OP I hope your son's arm is feeling better soon. I think looking into a waterproof cast would be a great idea. We havn't had any broken bones here yet but my cousin broke her arm several times and always got the waterproof casts.

I love them! I just got mine off yesterday, and I had the waterproofing. It was amazing. I never got itchy, and I could swim at Typhoon Lagoon :-D I would ask about it.

Poor kid!

Where did the first accident occur? School or home?

Not to add more to your list of worries, but if both injuries happened in the same place, you might get a call from Social Services. You never know these days...no one seems to want to let accidents be accidents.

I hope he has a fast recovery!!

I hope the Dr. has a waterproof cast for your son! It makes a huge difference on activities - i.e. swimming that they can participate in.

And yes...I know it's not the cast that needs to be waterproof (i.e.fiberglass) but the padding too - I think it is something similar to Tyvek.

When my dd broke her arm they didn't put a waterproof cast on it either for almost the same reason as was stated by the OP. We were going to a condo at a lake and it was towards the end of her "casting" so we let her swim in the water. She did just fine with it (even got a little sand in it from the lake) but she said the water felt so good going through it. We rigged up a little hairdryer tubing and stuck it down in the cast with cool air! Worked wonders and then 3 days later she got it off.

I hope it heals quickly and it doesn't break again! That stinks!!! Hugs to you for dealing with it again as well!
