Hi all,

We are having a mini baby boom in my family. My sister is pregnant (due in early Oct) and my SIL is also pregnant (due in early Jan). My SIL took one round of Clomid that resulted in her pregnancy, we are all happy that it was successful! Now, the doctors say that her HCg levels are quadrupling rather than doubling (I think that is how they put it), so they have scheduled her for an ultrasound on Mon.

I know that this could be a sign of a multiple pregnancy, but is there any other reason this could happen? We are obviously hoping for the former.

Also, does the Hcg level increase have any bearing on how many babies you are carrying? Like is there more Hcg for each baby or does it just show higher with any multiple pregnancy? I think we are all just hoping it is no more than twins or even triplets(due to the risks involved).

(LoL, I think my brother is hoping it is just a fluke and there is only one baby...he looks like the deer in the headlights at this point;))

They have a 5 yo who was conceived naturally, but haven't had any luck since UNTIL NOW!!!

Either way, we are all just hoping for 2 safe, healthy pregnancies with happy outcomes....

I guess we will know more on monday...very exciting, especially because I get the fun "auntie' part out of it....not the up all night part...

My HCG level did that when I was having a molar pregnancy.

I will keep her inmy thoughts that it's twins :)

Higher than normal levels may indicate choriocarcinoma of the uterus, hydatidiform mole of the uterus, ectopic pregnancy, or ovarian cancer.

I hope everything turns out okay!

I just wanted to echo what was said above - a molar pregnancy usually does that.

And, as I was told by my dr. when i got pg on Clomid - the HcG level and doubling time has no bearing on how many babies are in there.

Only good thoughts her way..

When I read your post, I immediately thought of a molar pregnancy, as the other posters above me have indicated. Usually regardless of how many babies you are carrying, your HCG numbers usually only double or a little higher every two days. Now, I say usually, since there are of course times when this isn't the case. But, MUCH higher, and fast rising HCG numbers usually are the first indication of a molar pregnancy.

Just to be a little more positive, my DIL did invitro and had rapidly rising HCG levels which were hard to interpret at first. End result???

Twin Girls due in July!!!! Mom and babies are doing fine. FYI her HCG level were 2-3x the norm for a pregnancy.

I have to ask....what is a molar pregnancy? I have never heard of this before and I have a 12 year old. Thanks in advance.

A molar pregnancy is basically when you develop something that's more like a tumor (usually non-cancerous) rather than a baby.

One of the reasons they do an ultrasound when they get unusual levels of HCG on the AFP test is to see if you're carrying twins. As others have mentioned, there are many other reasons that levels can be high, though. With Clomid, I'd think that there's a strong possibility of twins.

Just some pixie dust that it is twins.:wizard: :wizard:

When I was pregnant my HCg level at 13 days post transfer was 1250, I think normal was about 75. The nurse said it was at least 2, turns out it was 3. So a high HCG could be the result of multiples. Good luck
Tara

Hey,
Thanks for the honest replies. We are obviously hoping this is a case of twins rather than anything scary. I am just praying that all is well, I will update when I find out, either way.
