We are going to Hawaii at the end of Sept/ first part of Oct. I think we are going to go to Oahu for just a couple days before going to Maui.

I've read so much on Maui and what I thought are good areas to stay in and whatnot. I thought I wanted to stay in south Maui (Kihei or so) because it was still on the leeward side of the island, and also I thought Lahaina is real congested, crowded and thought this would be easier for trips to the top of the mountain for sunrise, and the road to Hana. Ive read Sugar Beach is one of the best beaches around for relaxing. Now when I read reviews of that areas places, it says it can get very windy and the sand blasting can occur if you catch my drift.

Should I move up closer to Lahaina/Kaanapali area? Would it be less windy? We want a beach we can lounge on or go into the water at any time of day. What do you think would be the best area for this?

Also, there are 7 of us going. If you have any budget friendly places you've stayed, I'd love to hear about them. We dont all have to be together in the same house/condo, but atleast on the same property would be nice.

Thanks, I knew you guys could help.

I have been to Maui twice and both times we stayed at the Embassy Suites in Ka'anapali. Beautiful beach there. We stayed more by the beach than we did the pool and never had a wind issue. We like to snorkel and there is good snorkeling right off the property. I don't know the prices cause we have a timeshare there. Good luck in your planning.

I'm no expert, but I'll give this a little bump by mentioning that I stayed at Sugar Beach Resort in Kihei the first week of last May, the only time I've been to Maui. We had also read reviews about the wind, but that wasn't an issue for us that week. We really enjoyed being right on the beach, which we often had to ourselves, other than the turtles in the surf every afternoon. Not great snorkeling there, though. We enjoyed being in such a quiet location, not sure if it was an off week, or what. It was centrally located for traveling to other places. Not a deluxe set-up, but it met our needs.

Check out this thread..has a lot of info. We went last Feb and stayed at the Grand Wailea. We are going again this Feb and will stay at a condo at Maui Kamole, and the Grand Wailea again. My DD will be cheering in the NFL Pro Bowl Half time show on Ohau!
