Hawaii on a budget

Lodging - definitely go for a condo rental instead of hotel. You'll save a bundle on meals if you can eat in and also make your own lunches to take on your excursions. Another advantage to condo is laundry. If you can do laundry you can avoid checked bag fees. Pack what you'll need in a couple of carry ons and then do a quick load of laundry when needed.

On Waikiki beach, you can get a last minute catamaran sail in the afternoons for very cheap as a walk up. It's beautiful to be out on the water looking back at Diamond Head and Waikiki beach. Gorgeous!

If either of you are a senior, check for discounts/free admission at the National Parks. I know my mom got in free in several of the places we went to in Maui and Oahu.

Definitely rent a car for some of your trip to get over to the other areas of Oahu - it's a beautiful island and has much more to offer than just Waikiki.

Check out the discussion boards on Trip Advisor for some great info on where to eat and rental car deals. I usually ignore the review on TA but the forums are a wealth of info.

I always suggest getting "Oahu Revealed" (there is a book for each island). My DH and I spent 6 months in Waikiki - he was on a work assignment. We found this book to be spot on with it's information.
