Can someone please explain to me the cost associated with renting through Hertz and the tolls that can be automatically added onto your bill? I am renting out of Chattanooga, TN and do not want to have to pay extra for using toll roads. I mean, we will pay to use the toll roads, I just don't want to have to pay Hertz as well. This may be a deal breaker with us.

It depends a bit on the area and I dont' know how it works for TN.

For the NY, MA, CT, area we have something called an EZPass and some Hertz cars have them. However you don't have to use it. You actually have to try to use the pass... and if you do then the toll and extra charge are added to your bill. You can just pay another way though. There are actually special lanes for using/not using the pass

In WA state when I have used toll roads the Hertz cars don't have anything you see saying they have a pass in the car if you choose not to go over to the toll (for the tacoma narrows bridge there is a road to take to get to the toll or you can just go right through and use the pass) you will be charged extra if you go over to the tolls and pay yourself your not.

So assuming TN also has some type of pass like this you would have to choose to pay for your tolls yourself (and know the process to do this) if not you will get charged.

If you do not want to use the rental company's toll program, you must first look on the paperwork to decline that option unless there is no mention in the paperwork and the agent says that the program goes into effect only when you try to use it.

Next you need to switch off the transponder if there is one in the car (usually at the middle rear view mirror) and it has an on-off switch.

Then you use only the cash lanes at the toll booths. Slow down; it may take some maneuvering through traffic to get to the desired lane. We suggest waiting in the manned lane and getting a receipt whenever possible.

The rental company program usually has a per day fee or a per toll fee on top of the tolls themselves.

Some systems have lanes that are both electronic and manual which is why it is useful to get a receipt in case the attendant forgets to turn off the electronic sensing when collecting cash.
