Having Second Thoughts about San Angel

I almost canceled our ADR at San Angel October 3 due to bad reviews, but it was hands-down the best dinner we ate(and we stayed for 6 nights). I wish I had it in front of me now!
What did you have to eat?
I go this Sunday and have ADR's for San Angle at 7:40 that night, I almost cancelled yesterday because Kona is still available, but didn't cancel cause we want to get to EPCOT the first day and if we went to Kona it would be to late to get to EPCOT and see Illuminations. So we kept San Angel we have been there before and liked it thought the food is not like Kona (which is great) we are sticking with the atmosphere and going to EPCOT on our day of arrival. This time tomorrow we will be heading to the airport.:cool2::hippie:

O we do have Le Cellier, Chefs de France, Rose and Crown, Coral Reef,Ohanna and the Hoop-Dee-Doo so if San Angle went down hill the rest of our trip should make up for it. And food,beer:drinking1 and wine fest

Another voice encouraging you to try it and see for yourself. We loved our meal there -- not because we were expecting ultra-authentic Mexican cuisine, but because we had a tasty meal served by a wonderful CM in a really terrific atmosphere.

Something to be aware of before you get there. The menu here on the DIS is not correct. I was looking forward to something on the menu and it was different when we got there. The menu on Allears is correct. I had the chicken breast with peppers and onions served on rice. It was very good even though it wasn't what I was looking forward to. Our server was great and the food came quickly. I love the atmosphere. It was the first time I had Flan. Let's just say it was interesting:rolleyes:. At least now I can say I have tried it. If we eat there again, I think I'll try something different.

Well didn't cancel and substitute Kona for San Angle like we were thinking of doing and we will be leaving on our trip in 3 hrs and we will be at San Angle tonight. I did notice allears was more updated but what the heck this is our 3rd time to San Angel and really liked the atmosphere there. We will miss the Combination Carmazel or Steak and shrimp that we had the first 2 times but maybe just try the steak alone or Mai-MAi.

Menus on any unofficial site should be used as a guideline only - there's always the chance that the menu won't be the same when you arrive as it was online. Even on Disney's official site, when they post menus (and they have menus posted for most of the Disney-owned TS - San Angel is not Disney-owned so I don't know if they have their menu) they will include a disclaimer reading "Menu items and prices are subject to change at any time without notice."

No doubt about it, the atmosphere at San Angel is one of the best in Epcot.

That being said, we have eaten there twice, and both times the food was mediocre at best, and the service was just deplorable. They hurrily rush the food to your table, and never check back on you, you have to flag them down to get drink refills, if there is a problem, etc. I have read on here that WDW has received many complaints about this restaurant for this very reason.

In my book, one of the best TS's is Marrakesh in Morocco. Lamb, couscous, mint tea, awesome service and great atmosphere. We went about 4-5 months apart on a trip, and went back to Marrakesh, the waiter remembered us and actually requested us at his table. It was one of the best dining experiences we ever had at WDW.

Well we could change to Kona but want to be in EPCOT for Illuminations our first night in, I know Kona has the greatest food but decided to stay with San Angle, I'll be there tonight and put my opinion of our 3rd time to San Angle on this post next week. If it is bad there I know the following days I have ADR's for top restaurants. Me and DW tastbuds aren't that refined so we tend to like just about anything. If the meal falls short I'll just have to go up by France a pout over a Gray Goose.:cool2::hippie:

I only have 2 hrs to get ready to go.

Just got back yeaterday:sad: and San Angle really liked it. I had the Filete Motuleno - Grilled beef tenderloin with beans, Oaxaco melted cheese, Ranchero sauce, Pablano peppers, and fried plaintain this was a nice thick cht of steak and very tender , watc for the dried pepper on top I cruch it and spterad it across the steak very hot, the only thin I'm not sure of was the fried plaintain. DW had Puntas de Filete en Salsa Guajillo - Beef tenderloin tips sautéed with fresh onions and chile Guajillo sauce, served over corn tortillas, black beans, and fresh cheese and she really loved it. If it wasn't for the Mushroom Fillet from Le Celler (this was the best steak me and DW ever had) this would have bee the favorite steak of the trip.
order of steak we liked
Le Cellier
San Angle
Coral Reef
Rose and Crown
Chefs De France ( was a flat piece of meat)

Here is a very mixed review I loved and DH hated it. You can't go by someone else's taste buds. The rest. is beautiful, a little crowded but it's Disney everything is crowded. I thought the food was great, very authentic, and the servers were very helpful and friendly. Like everyone else said it's definately not north of the border that everyone is used to, it's authentic. Hope you like it.

I do not like San Angel Inn at all.
I am a big fan of the tequila bar though.

I will probably try San Angel again in the future.
Recent reviews have been better IMO.
I've been told the no longer use the lousy chips and salsa they had been using.
I really like the restaurant itself, but have not enjoyed the food in years.

BTW: I do not buy the "It is authentic and you do not get it." argument.
I have been too many authentic Mexican restaurants and enjoy it.
I have been too many tex-mex restaurants and enjoy it.
I ate here several times before the DDP and it was great.
I did not enjoy the Mole here at all the last time I ate here.
They chips were stale and the salsa from a jar and made in NYC ;) IMO.

In addition they received a reprimand from Disney about two months ago due to all the complaints from customers.

I would assume this has forced them to improve things recently.

I know I have said it 100 times but I would like to see a Mexican street food platter here.
Tamales, tacos and the such. I think this would satisfy many people.
I know for a fact that the waiters in Mexico would like to see this.

The issue as it was explained to me was that the Chefs feel they are above that type of food. They could make some innovative versions on the street food.
I would love a duck tamale or a mole chicken taco for example.
Is it traditional, maybe; mabye not, but it sounds good too me.

They can make good food.
The appetizers in the tequila bar are made by the same staff as San Angel Inn.
I've tried several of them and was really impressed as are others I know that do not like the Inn.

I have to laugh at those of you who think this is not "real Mexican food"...I live in Mexico, only 1 1/2 hrs. from the "real" San Angel Inn in Mexico City, and let me tell you that, with the exception of the Tostitos and salsa, everything on the menu is authentic Mexican food, from various regions of Mexico. We do not have ground beef tacos, burritos, chimichangas, etc. that you would find at a "mexican" food restaurant in the U.S. As far as service goes, try asking your server about where in Mexico they are from...this will generally bring about a very interesting conversation. We have always had excellent service, and food from San Angel, and even though we live in Mexico, and can eat "real Mexican food" any day of the week, we still eat at this restaurant on every visit to the world.

As for the PP who wanted street-type tacos...I think this would be better suited to the Cantina outside, or even a small stand out front...that would be amazing!

Let’s not even talk about the food they serve in the cantina, that’s a thread by itself.;)

I except your knowledge of traditional Mexican food as written and do agree that it is traditional, Aye ;).
Much of my issues come from the fact that it was excellent 5 or 6 years ago and it is not as good anymore IMO. Of course I think this about much of the food in Epcot and Disney.
Mexico was always a must do for our trips for many years. My wife is a very picky eater and this was always the one place she liked. I have probobly eaten here 10-20 times overall. It will be hard to get her to go back.

Also do I think it would make sense to have one or two items that would reduce the complaints, but still be traditional. Maybe that is already hapening, but the last thing I want to see them do is Americanize the menu, that has already ruined enough places in Epcot.

I did spend the time talking to serveral staff members about they food and they were not thrilled with it either. Once you get them talking about the Mexican National team and Chivas and soccer in general they really open up, maybe too much.

In the end I just don't want to leave the place $100 dollars poorer, disappointed with the flavors, and dying of thirst because they put way too much salt in everything. (and it is not the margaritas since I do not get salt on them). A well done mole can be amazing, and an average one, not so much.

I really do hope the quality has improved and I will try it again, even though I have been disappointed the last 3 times.

As I have said the appetizers in the tequila bar are very good, and not just because I've had a few drinks.

TDC Nala - You mentioned you had the duck taco. I also recall you not being a fan of San Angel if I am not mistaken. How was it?
