having problem with grown man calling 10yr dd

What kind of controls are on the phone? I know that some kids phones have the capability to block all phone numbers besdies specific ones and also have built in GPS in the phones. Maybe ask your wilress company about the controls on the phone or the capability to switch to another phone/plan with such options.

My dd had a firefly phone. It allowed us to program only numbers we wanted her to be able to call, and those we wanted to allow to call her. Unfortunately if you don't know the phone number of someone, you can't block it. We needed to set up a pin number too, so she couldn't just go in and change anything.
The phone itself doesn't have any numbers on it, just a mom, dad, emergency and one other symbol that I can't remember. We had it through Cingulair but I believe you can get them on their own, without a carrier and use minute cards.

Why does a 10 year old even need a cell phone?:confused3

I would get rid of the phone and let her use just the house phone.

:confused3 :confused3 :sad1: Why would you even ask that? This is not about whether she should have a phone. I am always amazed at the way people jump to tell other people what their children should or should not have. It is none of my business what any other child than my own does or has unless it is a safety issue. The OP posted she has it because she is with the youth group often. We also did the same thing for our dd. She never goes anywhere without us that she does not have it. I guess it is like having a dime when we were younger. How many pay phones do you actually see these days?

OP, report to the police just to get their suggestions. I wander how he got it in the first place.

:sad2: And why shouldn't I ask that? Op wouldn't have posted if she didn't want responses, I'm not dissing OP. I grew up in the country, there were no pay phones anywhere. But my parents knew where my 10 year old little self was. As far as having a cell phone for safety, I think there great, and I absolutely would want a child to use one for an emergency. BUT for safeties sake is it really necessary for a 10 year old to have a cell phone and talk to whomever without the parents knowing who is on the other end?
I think cell phone use has gotten absolutely ridiculous.
And I fear it would be quite easy for a predator to get a phone number from a child. My opinion only not a slam.

Call the police and get advice at least. The cell phone company should be able to change the number without a problem, but I'd be more interested in catching him.
I'd get another phone for your daughter in the meantime.

It's scary, I know. The man is not innocent, don't feel bad about being suspicious.

True. There are two separate issues going on. One is whether this man is dangerous & does need to be investigated, for the daughter's safety.

The second issue is getting a safe number for the daughter. The phone company, and depending on who the OP speaks may not be up on the latest investigative procedures or what is required. And it's not really their ballpark. The police have to request certain procedures, like getting the number of the man who calls, etc.

The order of what to do could impact the final outcome. If the current phone number is disconnected before calling the police,,by a well intentioned, (overseas) phone employee who's only aim is to give a new number, for customer satisfaction, but really doesn't know better, it may ruin their chances of an investigation and catching this man, should he need to be caught.

NO! Do not involve your daughter in such a thing. That's what undercover cops in the Sexual predators unit are supposed to do. That is their job. And then they will show up & arrest this pervert. If he's Mexican, he may also be here illegally.

Now he is a pervert AND an illegal immigrant?

Did the OP say he ever said anything sexual in nature or inappropriate?

I got the impression there was only that one coversation in English-the one with the mother. I don't think the daughter spoke to him in Spanish because I got the impression she can't speak Spanish :confused3

I think we are all just speculating here.

I would have the number changed immediately and instruct daughter to NEVER speak to someone she doesn't know.

She needs to be taught that it is okay to simply hang up the phone. Why are you worried about being rude, you don't know this person, either. It is very rude of him to keep calling in the first place.

This is good advice regardless of whatever comes of this situation.
