Does anyone know how to get a key/have a key made for a vehicle? I know a locksmith can be called to open a locked vehicle, but what can be done when you don't have a key to start it up? Anything?? Does anyone have any suggestions?? TIA!

If it is a newer car, I would call a local dealership, give them the VIN and they can have a key made for you. I know for mine it would cost about $5, my sister $15 and my DH $100 or so (his has a chip inside).

Never been in that position before where I would need one made off of the lock so I wouldn't know.

I agree with calling the dealership.

I have a funny story relating to car keys....
When I first met DH in the mid 80's, my Camaro was brand spanking new....and where I worked, I parked just off a main route with the car visable to the traffic. DH worked as a mechanic for a gas station back then. One day while I was over there, I was introduced to "Leo"...a friend of theirs, who was a vehicle repo-man. Upon introduction, Leo handed me a key to my own car   Seems he'd spotted it at my job, and figured being as new/expensive as it was, there was a good chance he'd be getting a call to have it picked up sooner or later  I had visions of this guy driving past it everyday, eyeballing it and drooling :p Sorry Leo...after all these years, I still have it ;)

I was in the situation of losing my only car key in a snow bank a bunch of years ago before I got smarter. :)

I hadn't locked my door, and strange enough even though the key to my dad's (completely different) car didn't fit quite right, it still started the car. I know, I know, really safe lock system.

Anyway, I was able to drive it to a locksmith and he made a key from the passenger side door. Interestingly enough, on older cars, they don't like to make copies of keys off the ignition cause it's used so much and worn down. The lock that is used the least is the passenger and they can get the best key off of it. It took him about 10 minutes to make me a key. I had him make 2 for me. :D

So instead of a cost of $125 to come to me to make the key, he only charged me $25 cause I was able to go to him.

That spring what should I find but that key I had lost in the snow.

you must not live with my dad lol.
I have more keys to my car than i care to think about. my car hadn't even been in my driveway yet and it has like 8 keys for it.

My dad always goes to hardware store or something and gets keys made right away. Kinda funny when we go to sell a car and hand new owner a keyring full of keys to the car.

his logic is everybody in family of driving age needs key to car so if you block them in they can just go move your car. great theory dad but i don't want whole family having key to my car and unless you plan on waking up neighbors you still need my remote to shut alarm off.
