Have your kids had teeth pulled?

My DD11 went to the dentist yesterday for her 6 month cleaning/checkup, etc.

Xrays show that her 4 canine teeth that she should have lost around 9 yo aren't budging. Furthermore, a panoramic xray showed that the top permanent ones trying to come down are growing in sideways. He feels if we don't remove these baby canines, letting these come in, they will become impacted, necessitating oral surgery some day.

The bottom ones aren't budging either and the ones trying to come up are extremely crowded and they fear they will pop out at the bottom....does my explanation make sense? I'm horrible with trying to explain things...

Anyway - they want to give her laughing gas and novacaine. I'm worried about how safe this is. She gets bouts of asthma with any cold and is exercised induced as well. I have call into her ped. for more info about it...

How did your kids feel after having the gas? Where they in alot of pain afterwards?

Other than making sure she is monitored, what other things should I be asking about for the extractions? HOw do they know how much gas to give a child?

Geez, this worries me...sorry so long.

I understand your explanation perfectly.

both of my girls had to have baby teeth pulled for similar reasons. they had novocaine, but didn't have nitrous oxide, and they were just fine.

My DD had teeth extracted for the same reasons. I don't remember if she had gas but she was able to go back to school after her appointment (her choice). Fortunately she didn't have any medical problems so it's probably a good idea to talk to ped about this beforehand.

Both of my DS's have had to have teeth pulled for similar reasons-baby teeth would not come out and permanent ones came in behind, in front or not at all (the orthodontist loves me)
the older one had his done with no novicane or gas-he had pnuemonia when he was very small and is so terrified of needles and such that he would rather deal with pain. The younger one had seven pulled at one time-he had novicaine but no gas and did fine.

I have had several teeth pulled and I was my normal kid self afterwards. I maynot have wanted a CB right afterwards but I was talking about food and ate within couple hours.

My DD had to have teeth pulled about three different times. Hers just wouldn't come out. She has allergies and exercise induced asthma too. The first time, she had gas, and it was a piece of cake. The second time, I talked her out of the gas, and it was horrible. She was crying and hyperventilating the entire time, and the dentist (not pediatric) was not very sympathetic. The last time, back to gas. It wears off very quickly, I think they give them oxygen. Only you know how stalwart your kid is. Diana

Thanks everybody for replying. I know it's common, but I just don't like the idea of having her inhale the nitrous oxide.

Dancind - may I ask why you talked your DD out of having the gas?

This dentist is a pediatric one.

DS has had 6 teeth pulled for similar reasons, all by a pediatric dentist. Our regular dentist actually prefers that major work on kids be done by a ped. specialist.

He was given ChloroHydrate (sp?). He was a little "drunk" but didn't care that he was going back to the dental chair. No problems coming out of it and the dentist says that there are less side effects than the gas. It also helps kids before they go back into the treatment room.

I had to have work done year before last and was knocked out(major thing).I must have been on pain pills all of break which is not my idea of fun but if you can get the work on her done over a school break

My daughter uses the laughing gas at the dentist and she is perfectly fine and back to normal as 5 minutes after he's done. Try not to worry, it will make it MUCH easier on her. My daughter was having panic attacks going to the dentist and it has made a world of difference, she doesn't even mind going now.

Yep. DD14 had her wisdom teeth removed last November. She was hospitalized and put under general anesthesia for it. She didn't have any problems with it.:D

They know how much Nitrous (N20) to give based on the weight of the child and it is IMMEDIATELY reversable if there are any problems. Once they give you oxygen the gas is gone. We almost always give it to kids simply for anxiety reasons. It keeps them from moving all around during the extractions.

Thanks again everyone - I do feel more comfortable now.

HoneyPooh - Thank you, I assume your either a dentist or hygeniest? So that's how they know, thanks for telling me. I'm happy to hear it's quickly reversable. I do think this would help her with her fear of having it done...she started crying in the dentist's office when the dr and I were just discussing it :(

I might need some of it myself ;) :D

I'm actually the office manager for an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon. I end up explaining this stuff to LOTS of people:D
We get plenty of parents who would like to have the N20 ;) Only problem with the N20 is that we haven't found a single insurance plan that will cover it and our office charges $75 :(

Just checked in. My DD was in the chair, the dentist had the shot ready. We both told her that the worst of it was the shot, and it would be over quickly. Well, it didn't work. If your DD was crying about the possibility of having this done sometime in the future, I think you'd better spring for the gas. I'm averse to extra chemicals too, but she didn't even get a headache from it. Diana

I had 4 teeth pulled (on two separate occasions) when I was younger, for similar reason, old teeth not falling out, need to make room for the new teeth. I never had gas, only the novocaine. I also had periodontal surgery when I was younger. Needed retainers (top and bottom) and my orthodontist felt that the gums on my bottom teeth were not thick enough and was afraid that with the movement and strain put on them by the retainer they would break. He sent me to a periodontist who did a fairly simple gum graph on me. Cutting gum from out of the roof of my mouth and stitching it onto the bottom teeth gumline. I don't remember having anything stronger than novocaine for this procedure either.

I had 3 teeth pulled last year (Iwas 13.5) right before I got my braces. They were all baby teeth, that chould have come out before then. One of the teeth still hasen't grown in. (a canine tooth) and I'm hoping it does so it doesn't get pulled down with a chain! Ouch! My ortho did give my Happy Gas and a numbing shot.
