I just signed my son up for Cotillion. The classes will be held in our neighborhood. Very covenient for me.

He does not want to dance with any 4th grade girls. His cousins did Cotillion in Phoenix and he knows what to expect. He is not happy with me at the moment. There will be 12 other boys that he knows from church and baseball.

Did your child like Cotillion? Did you enjoy the party where the parents get to participate?

My oldest hated it and my middle child thought it was fun. Youngest still has a couple years to go.

Cotillion here is at the country club and starts in sixth grade. There also is a seventh grade program and, I think, an eighth grade one. My middle child did two years.

If they had something parents were invited to when my older child did it, I didn't hear about it. My middle child strictly forbid me to go near the place.

It is at our Country Club also, but any child that lives in the area can come to Cotillion. It is not restricted to just members. It is for 4th, 5th and 6th graders. The 6th graders will have their own party with a DJ.

My husband is not thrilled with the idea but he agreed that it will help our son's self esteem. He has good manners but he just needs to polish them a bit.

I am not sure if they have it in our area, because I don't know any kids that go, but I went when I was a kid and I was glad I did. We learned how to dance and learned party mannners. There was a band that played every week and different parents would chaperone. This was more that 30 years ago and I still remember many of the dances we learned!! I wish they did have it in our area, I would send my kids.

Every time me beautiful 17 DD burps louder than her little brother I remind her that I spent good money to send her all those years ago.

It must be Kallison... I don't know about this as well.

Cotillion is a class on etiquette. The children are taught: table manners, which piece of silverware to use, how to introduce themselves to another person, how to carry a conversation, and how to dance.

The boys have to wear coats and ties. The girls have to wear Sunday dresses and white gloves. They balance the classes so there are the same amount of girls & boys. Every child will always have a dance partner.

There are 4 (1) hours classes. On a Sunday afternoon there will be a dance with the parents invited. My son will have to formally introduce us to his instructors, he will serve us refreshments and then he will ask me to dance the first dance.:p

All of this for $85.00. I think it is a bargain.

The girls didn't wear gloves to my sons' cotillion! The boys were not required to wear coats except to the last dance. There were five dances, all on a weekday evening, and lasting two hours plus a weekend semiformal dance that was about three hours. The semiformal included a dinner the second year.

And it cost a lot more than $85 -- I think it was $250.

I think it is a southern thing too. Although I did take a dance class similar to what you are talking about but that was about 40 years ago in Baltimore. Once the lady who taught it died, I think the class ended.

Nope. not just a Southern thing! I'm in California and I went to cotillion when I was in the 6th grade. I hated it at the time, but time heals all wounds. I do know how to properly set a formal table now because of it!
