My sister just told me about Bountiful Baskets--a food co-op.
It looks great, but if you have tried it did you like it?
I am wondering how it will work to have the co-op choose the fruits/veggies I am going to need. Do you end up going to the store for other produce, or do you just make do with their basket that week?
Has it really saved you money?

What did you think? :confused3

If none of the Budget board Dis people have tried it I will be more cautious and skeptical than I would have been. Hmmm.....

I know a DISer who has used them before and had good things to say about them. I'll try to send her this way for you.

I participate in Bountiful Baskets every week! It has been a true blessing for my family. For 15 dollars (16.50 with cc processing fees) I get about 40-45 dollars worth of produce. I don't get a say in the produce, but I've always been pleased. For example, this last week we got mushrooms, tomatoes, corn on the cob, romaine lettuce, swiss chard, Anaheim peppers, cantaloupe, mangoes, blackberries, apples and bananas. I have a hard time using up all the produce each week. There is plenty for my family of 7.

My niece and her college roommates did this all school year long. They didn't order a basket every week, but twice a month, and it was a real blessing for them to eat more healthily.

A couple of weeks ago, we got onions, and I had so many of them that I have been able to chop them, freeze them and use them as needed.

I guess it depends on how much produce you and your family go through. I very rarely have to get any more produce from the store! If you are leery, you could always try it for one week and see how you like it.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask me!

Thanks, Glynis! I knew you liked the program. :thumbsup2

My parents participate in a similar produce co-op where they live. It's not Bountiful Baskets, but it's the same type of program. My mother has gotten some produce she would not have otherwise purchased, so she has tried some new recipes due to the box. Overall she really likes it.

Me too! I love the bountiful baskets. I just ordered mine for this Saturday today! Good deal and it's kinda like a produce grab bag. My basket usually lasts my family of 6 about 1.5 weeks. ;)

So jealous... I see they have it for San Antonio, but nothing available for right now :)

Thanks so much for your help!
I was able to get a basket last night before closing time for the orders. I will try it this Saturday.

Again, I'm so glad to have this board :disrocks:

Let me know how you like it! I won't be getting one this week, so I'm prepared to be jealous of you!

I LOVE Bountiful Baskets!! It's totally worth it for me and my family. What I do to make the most of what produce I get with the basket is to plan my meals AFTER I get my basket. That way I can take full advantage of everything I've gotten for the week. My family of 6 uses everything in the basket within a week, but we eat very healthy and mostly vegetarian. You can opt to get an organic basket or regular. The organic is $10 more than the regular. I also go volunteer every other week and bring my kids with me. They actually really like helping out. You should definitely give it a try and go help volunteer if you like it. :)

It is worth it. You get more for 15 with them than you do from the store. The bread they offer freezes very well, they also offer boxes of fruit thru out the year which is fantastic for canning and freezing.
Like others have said the only downside is that you don't get a say in what they are offering for the baskets, only the extra packs. This last basket for me wasn't fantastic, but the one before was great.
