It's just math. Did you notice your symbol was on the list several times? Try all the numbers that are near the number you chose. For example 21. You ended up with number 18. Try 20, 22, 23, 24 etc, you're still going to end up with 18.

ETA: all the answers are divisible by 9

It seems to me, that there must be only x amount of sums that this formula would come up with All of those sums have the same symbol, so no matter what the number is, it is the same symbol each time.

Look at the chart, and see all the numbers with the same symbol. Every number I got has the same symbol next to it. You can't beat this.

That thing was freaking me out.

I noticed that when I played the game and thought of a number it always guessed it right but when I just randomly picked a symbol it got it wrong.

I figured out the "trick" because it was bugging me so much!!

For the math geeks, your original number is of the form 10X+Y (so if you picked 34, that's 10*3 + 4). From this you subtract (X+Y). Or,

(10X+Y)-(X+Y) = 9X

The symbols for those numbers are the same.

Try it with a couple of numbers in one "try"
You'll see you will end up with the same symbol for each different number.
