Have you or would you ever, buy a bathing suit from a thrift store?

A swimsuit that has been worn a few times, and is completely clean and washable... that is one thing.

A used mattress....
OMG!!!!!!
Sorry, but that is just disgusting....
Do you know what kinds of bacterias and mold and dust-mites/droppings, and, well... ETC, a microbiologist would find in a used mattress.
That is not just a psychological (and non-rational) thing. It is very real.
That is DISGUSTING!!!!

PS: Yes, out of necessity, one must sleep on a hotel mattress... But they are kept covered and constantly with new linens, etc... A decent hotel will also change out mattresses every so often.
The mattresses are one reason we will not stay in questionable/cheaper motels.

I've never purchased a used swimsuit, but, under the right conditions, I might... if the suit was in very good condition, if it was a top-of-the-line or exclusive brand, etc.

I'd wash it first, of course!

I'm not naive enough to think that everyone who tries on swimsuits before buying always keeps his/her underwear on when trying on the suits.

That said, I actually very infrequently buy/shop for any used clothing. When our DD was in a living history "Victorian" class, the students had to wear Victorian costumes to each class. So I shopped our local Goodwill store then to try to find some Victorian-looking blouses & long skirts. I went in several months ago looking for something specific for our older DS, but I can't remember now exactly what I was looking for... white shorts maybe?... but, whatever it was, I remember not finding it.

I've been given used clothing (including swimsuits) before for my DD from someone who worked w/ my Mom. But I knew the lady & the girl to whom the clothes had belonged, & we washed everything.

I don't regularly shop yard sales, but I've had a yard sale & have sold swimsuits at our yard sale. In fact, at that particular yard sale, someone bought my Mickey Mouse swimsuit because she was going to Disney World - which was the only time I had ever worn the swimsuit. LOL!

I'd never, ever buy a used mattress (GROSS!!), but we have been given a mattress before from family - our current king-sized mattress in our bedroom is from my parents' house. (It was from a bed in their guest room that was basically never used.)

I used to not think much about used furniture & would buy used furniture. However, I'm a member of a coastal community Facebook page. Last summer, after Hurricane Matthew came up the coast of Florida, I was kind of shocked at how many people tried to sell furniture that had been sitting in flood waters.

So now I wonder about the history of other used things - especially if you can't completely sanitize them.

It's no big deal to me and yes we have bought swimsuits. But we buy pretty much everything from thrift stores and our family has no issues with it. Everything gets washed before wear. We can afford new - but I don't see why we need to. We're of the "a penny saved is a penny earned" mentality. Besides - I do like the reuse aspect of thrifting - less stuff for the garbage heaps!

Don't people try on NEW bathing suits at the store? So odds are, someone had worn a new bathing suit before your buy it. While I have not purchased a used bathing suit, I don't see a difference. You wash it before you wear it.
Any bathing suit I've ever tried on had a sanitary strip in place that you tear out after you buy it. Plus, you're supposed to leave your under garments on when trying on bathing suits.

There are vintage swimsuits I'd buy, in a heartbeat. I usually won't pony up for those types of things, but yeah, I would. Usually I just buy my suits at Target and consider them disposable. I like water slides and they are hard on swimsuits.

As in.... you wear it once then throw it out? :scratchin

Assuming you would wash anything purscased in a thrift store before wearing it, why is everyone so squeamish about this? Just curious. I mean, how do you you know the previous owner of the shorts or jeans you bought didn't go commando?

You don't. You just take it home, wash it and try not to think about it. But a used swimsuit/underwear just has an ick factor (to me) that cannot be explained.

I personally don't think I would wear a used one (or underwear, etc). Used shoes, jeans, shirts - yes. But items that are that intimate would be a little weird to me personally.

I would never need to swim that bad.

I have no issue with thrift store items (although we do come home and wash them before wearing). My daughter went thrift store shopping with a friend yesterday. But both of us would draw the line at underwear or swim suits.

Doesn't matter if it's rational or not. Just no.

I had some old McDonald's Disney glasses and broke a couple and turned to Ebay. I hesitated to buy used, but then had to remind myself that I eat out at restaurants all the time and it hasn't killed me yet.

That said, I'm still a firm no on thrift store bathing suits. :)

Most new women's swimsuits have a liner on the crotch you remove when you get home. Plus, I always try them on with undergarments. Might not make much difference, but it makes me feel better.

Still a firm no on thrift store suits.

I don't think I caught that, is that a no for used swimsuits? ;) (Just teasing you, of course! lol)

I occasionally will browse through a thrift store, mainly looking for furniture. I am always amazed when I see bathing suits on the racks. Female's especially.

It got me curious. Do people actually buy used bathing suits? Now, some are new still with tags and I understand that....but the others?
I bought a vintage bikini from a vintage thrift shop once. I couldn't tell if it had ever been worn before. It was clean & didn't look worn. I don't know of any disease you can get from a well washed bathing suit. Never had any problems.

Lol, no! I just don't put much money in my swimsuits. If I could keep them nice like a good suit, I would have definitely dropped some cash on some vintage pieces. Instead? Vintage "inspired" for less than $20 a piece mix and match is fine for me. They'll get those little pulls on the bottoms, or a strap will break, it'd bother me to do that to a nice piece of clothing. As it is, when a piece gets messed up, NDB.

Same for me. I shop thrift all the time. But intimate wear/swimsuits I would personally pass over. Same thing with shoes too...maybe it's just me

Slow day at my house, can you tell?

Slow day on the DIS too! Someone needs to start a semi-controversial thread or something. :)
