Have you had the H1N1 vaccine??

First off, while the health units have indicated that priority groups should be done first, they do not seem to know who priority is.
We know that there is short supply this week because the WHO said pregnant women need a special vaccination, which we now have learned is incorrect.
We also found out that kids under 10 may not need a second shot.
The health units themselves do not know what priority groups are.
I know a couple, one is diabetic, one has asthma, they were able to get the shot on the weekend.
Today, watching the news, I saw a diabetic and an asthmatic turned away.
It seems to depend on who is running the clinic.
The sick thing is my friensds daughter has leukemia, they had to fight to get a shot.
But, the likes of Paul Bernardo are getting their shots starting today.
Oh, by the way the prison guards who watch them have to wait in line like the rest of us.

To those who want the shot but can't don't worry this isn't a long term shot as this virus is mutating 3x the rate of normal flus which means by the time the give out all the shots they'll have to do it again! I hope to god we don't come down with it but the shot is in short supply right now so we arn't in line( I do have a DD with MD and under 5 as well as a DH with MD in a wheel chair!) We are just starting to get the virus in our area so far my kids don't report any absantees as of yet( 4 classes 2 schools). Hopefully this dies out soon.

I have to verify this one. I am a guard, working in a Young Offender facility. The youth I supervise have been deemed 'High Risk', due to their environment. I, on the other hand, am not 'high risk', even though I am in the same environment, nor are my kids, who I bring it home to. We have 1 confirmed case in our building, and 2 staff have confirmed cases among there kids.
In addition to this, our 2 levels of government came forward with their pandemic policy, telling employers to expect sick calls (and not to consequence employees), and employees to stay home if they feel flu-like symptoms. Ontario's Govt turned around, and introduced a new sick policy for us, that started discipline after 4 sick calls.

yes, I was supporting your comment, with further info.

I'm not getting it and neither are my kids. Both kids are currently sick and we've been told by more then one doctor that DD has it. However, I wouldn't have got it anyway. There is too much unknown about it and to be honest it's just the flu.

Don't get me wrong - I feel for anyone who has someone who is high risk but for the rest of the population there is no need for panic. I hate what the media has done with this. Caused total panic over the flu. I'm not putting down the risks involved but seriously there are far more dangerous illnesses out there.

My DD has been super sick but she has had the flu and a bacterial infection. The infection has been the thing that has made her really sick. Now, DS is sick and even though he isn't feeling well, he was much sicker with the flu last February which wasn't H1N1.

You know, at the end of the day, no one really knows how well the vaccine really works. I have seen in the last week alone 4 patients die from "H1N1 like symptoms" in the ICU, the oldest one was 25. None of them except for one had risk factors or was pre-disposed.

I have ask a lot of staff around me what they thought about the shot and whether or not getting it was a good idea. The answers I got were about 50/50. I've asked some of the ICU physicians we have here, and their thoughts as their level of education and phatology of disease is much larger than any of us. Most of them took the vaccine.

It seems it's the luck of the draw as far as what strain you catch if you do catch the H1N1. You just have to hope and pray that it's a strain your body is capable of fighting.

Stay safe everyone, wash those hands regularly and stay home as much as possible.

Absolutely. I'm also leery and on the fence on whether or not I should get the vaccine.

Also, for others commenting in this tread, consider yourself and your family very lucky if you got the H1N1 virus mildly and can call it "just a flu". There are kids from our school, one from my own child's class, currently in the hospital. An otherwise completely healthy child. My own normally perfectly healthy, athletic daughter spent a lovely day there on intervenous after complications of the flu. Some of kids in her class are getting it mildly. I guess many of them will decide it's "just the flu".

Something that confuses me is the term "media hype" being freely thrown around. The information is coming from the Health Canada, Centre for Disease Control (American), Toronto Public Health, etc. They are the ones calling it a serious pandemic. It's not as if The Star or any other news outlet made it up.

From what I have read, 1/3 of the deaths are supposedly healthy people. But a large number of these healthy people are obese or morbidly obese. Also for the so called healthy kids dying, it seems that most of these were Vitamin D deficient and labeled as non-white.

Also, their is no scientific proof that being vaccinated has any benefits. In 2001 their was a 40% shortage of vaccines and there was no increase in deaths and the number of people getting sick.

As it not being hyped. The CDC and WHO need funding, how do they get more funding? They scare people! It is that simple, how many times of the years have we been told we all are going to die? Yet, we are still here.

They have cried wolf one to many times.

I don't know what the right or wrong choice is. You can only do what you feel right for you and yours?

I have many friends who are Dr's. Firstly, I asked them what they were doing. Without exception, they and their own families had the vaccine. One friend in particular is very conservative in her medical treatments (she is a Psychiatrist her husband Director of Radiology) she had it, her husband had it, her 20 year old daughter had it. I read all I could. The legit sources and some 'out there' opinions. I am exhausted from researching it!:confused3

My neighbour is a VP for a GSK competitor...he has had the vaccine, his entire family has had it. He read the 'EU' whatever that is..the precise target age is 13! That's very scary. That boy that died, he played hockey with his son (I assume against his sons team) they knew him well. He was a very healthy young boy --until he died.

So, that all being said. What do I know?
But myself, my daughter, my husband all had our shots yesterday. My daughter that attends school in NYC is having hers today.

You have to do what you have to do.

Minnie56, I agree, you have to do what you think best for yourself and your family. I was relieved that our 2 kids were vaccinated last night and once it opens up my husband and I will be going as well when the kids have to have their 2nd shot.

Minnie an Fnky, I agree with you both.
Once my son was vaccinated, I too felt a sense of relief.
Between the kids at school, and hockey who have been sick, I was just glad it was done.

me and my 2 DD's had the shot today.. my son has a cold so will wait till he feels better to get it, I will feel better when he has had it.

I work in Emergency management and my mom works in health care and we disagree on the vaccine (she won't get it)

everyone must remember that Pandemic means it's global, this isn't a seasonal flu

My main issue as far as the vaccine goes it not so much the possible risk of getting it done or not but the consequences of having got the shot and how it might affect my future children. What I take now can have drastic effects on my coming children and their children so until I know our system knows what the risks are, I am not going to take it.

my brother just got one today - went to a school walked in and out in about 10 minutes.

it's amazing that there are places that have 5 6 7 hour waits and others (not well known) who's workers take 45 minute coffee breaks because there's no one coming in to get their shots.

it's amazing how disorganized this is - it all should have been given to the family doctors since they know who's in the high risk groups right from the start.

everyone can be in the high risk groups if they lie since there is no way to confirm or deny what someone is saying.

DS(3) and I got the shot yesterday. We are in Milton and had about a 1.5hr wait. DS is priority because of his age and I was allowed the shot because I have been watching my friends 4 month old, her father just had a stroke and she is afraid to take her to the hospital. DH should also be getting the shot because he has asthma but he hasn't had time yet. It seemed in our line that most people had small children.

Haven't yet heard the obese connection, anyone else ?
Also haven't heard of the vitamin D connection and non white? Anyone ?

I hadn't heard of the obesity thing, but Google found some CDC reports from this summer. I'm not sure if the stats are holding with further cases.

There were also some reports that vitamin D may help protect against the flu, but no reports (that I could find) saying that most of the deaths were in vitamin D deficient patients (and the reports about vitamin were extrapolating from old reports).
