Have you had granite repaired? (pits, etc)

Our granite, about 7 years old, has a fair number of scratches and pits, seemingly due to abuse from the prior owner of the home. We didn't notice this when buying the house as the pattern is busy and from a short distance the probs aren't visible, but of course we see and feel them when cleaning, etc.

Some of the pits are large enough that one could even get a fingertip stuck in them when, for example, running the finger around the surface.

Are there:
1. DIY solutions to this sort of thing?
2. Failing (1), how about professionals services? How much should one expect to pay?

I recently had mine repaired.

The main issue was that, over time, the undermount sink had come lose. It is a stainless steel sink that was undermounted with granite pieces attached with epoxy and the disposal's motion had eventually jarred the seals lose.

Not that this is your issue, but that's what got me to call the repair guy. I just called the local retailer for granite countertops and they had a repair man.

When he came to check the issue, he said he'd repair any chips, etc while he was there to fix the sink. So I spent some time feeling all over the countertop, and every little knick I found, I put a post it note by it with an arrow pointing to the spot.

It took about three hours of total work to fix the sink, fill in the chips, and do some other minor repairs (seams had some issues due to house settling.) The total fee was $220. My countertops look and feel brand new.

fwiw, the repair guy said granite places are really hurting right now, b/c of the economy and so few people building new houses. So you should be able to get a very decent price for the repair work to be done. I'm not sure it would be worth it to do it yourself.

Thanks! I was searching in the meantime and also called the place who did an install in a previous home. They are supposed to call back; they did sound like they need business.
