Have you gotten a COVID vaccine?

It is a privilege to not fear getting ill. You are making choices based on this privilege, not because you don't have a choice. You apparently can miss work for the length of illness and/or quarantine, not worry about being too sick to take care of your kids, no worries about bills getting paid, etc.
It is NOT like that for everyone.
I think you misunderstand. As I’ve posted on other threads, my family is on the verge of losing everything bc of this virus. The business my husband has worked 80 plus hours a week for years building will not survive this. We’ll be lucky to have our home when this is over. That’s super privileged right there. Having lost both my parents before I was 20 (therefore I don’t have to worry about them now) that’s super privileged too. I am SOOOO lucky 🙄 Having to go to work every day, where I am exposed to it daily, also super privileged. Not having a choice but to go inside a grocery store bc the privilege of curbside pickup doesn’t exist.... wow. I’m lucky. I’ve busted my butt to build up some sick time at work and bc of the 20 years I’ve worked there, I will get paid for 10 days if I’m sick. It’s really great being me. You are certainly welcome to come join me in my privileged life if you’d like. There are mountains of bills I can’t pay. So no. I’m not making choices because I’m not afraid. I’m not afraid bc I have no choice.

Like me, you're in Florida.

Florida published a very detailed plan back in October as part of their preparations for a vaccine. It's available on the Department of Health's website, and public health officials have been appearing in the media daily explaining the process.

Here's a link: http://ww11.doh.state.fl.us/comm/_p.../vaccination-plan/vaccination_plan_latest.pdf

The priorities are as follows:
  • First wave of vaccinations
    • Healthcare workers who have frequent patient contact, especially hospital workers -- probably all of the doses received today will go to these folks. We got 170K+ doses in the first shipments and all of those will be used for first dose shots.
    • Long term care facility staff and residents -- Walgreen's and CVS will be helping with these vaccinations.
    • First responders -- police, fire rescue/EMS personnel
    • Patients with high risk comorbidities -- most of the news reports talk about elderly people with comorbidities, but I expect that all people with high risk factors will be vaccinated regardless of age.
After that will come "essential workers," elderly people without high risk comorbidities, and then the general population.

Walgreens, CVS, Costco, Walmart, and other retailers are already gearing up for the general population distribution, but that probably won't start until April-May. Some major universities will also serve as vaccination centers.
Winn-Dixie sent out an email today saying they would be offering the vaccine, when it's available to the general public. Publix signed up to offer it, but I haven't gotten anything from them yet. I'd be surprised, if they aren't also offering it.

My firefighter/paramedic son gets his this Friday. :thumbsup2 His department services 3 nursing homes of which he said one has very high COVID case loads.

My son who is an EMT/Firefighter has the opportunity to get one but has decided not to. He lives with us and I wish he would get it. He gets a lot of medical calls and he’s had a few exposures.

This seems to assume all adults will get the vaccine. That’s probably not true. It’s being reported that only about 50% of hospital personnel are interested in getting vaccinated when they’re first eligible. National polls suggest similar numbers for the general public, if not, slightly lower.

If you want a vaccine ASAP then keep up with you state info as I think vaccines will quickly become available for whoever will get vaccinated.

Any folks who have been vaccinated have any idea how many of your co-workers will do the same?

I work in an ER with people who got terribly sick. One didn't come in because he knew he'd be admitted. He's a super health/diet guy who runs/bikes/skis. He was home in bed with low 02 sats and a pulse up to the 140s for 5 weeks. I am convinced that if he wasn't as baseline healthy, he might have died. Another girl (50) was hospitalized and on a vent for 3 months- she was sent to long term care with a tracheostomy which has been reversed, but she was gravely ill and will be lucky to bounce back. But, she's alive. We take the disease very seriously. Most of us will get the vaccine.

(side note, I 100% believe I caught covid from coworker 1 above- we eat lunch together most days) I had a very mild case. I do have antibodies. I'll still follow Fauci's advice and be vaccinated this week.

Thanks for being on the frontline in the ER. I hope your co-workers continue to improve.

We started vaccinations today. News all over the place here. As for my direct coworkers only two have signed up for it. I work in the inner city where a high number of patients and employees are people of color so there is a lot of mistrust. 90% of people I work with do not want to get the vaccine.

I have a 20 year old son who is an essential worker and lives with us. We have to run our household in very uncomfortable ways to protect my wife from his exposure. If he had an opportunity to get vaccinated and refused, I would tell him to move out.

Cousin is a nurse and many of her co workers are passing on this vaccine. I imagine a lot of doctors will hard pass as well. Just too new and too many unknowns that they don't feel it's safe to take it now.

I missed the press conference today and was wondering who in Ohio was going to be first.

I will be one of the last to get it. I am 41 and DH and I are both working from home and the kids are doing remote for the rest of the year.
He tweeted the other places that are starting today:

My workplace (one of the hospitals listed) is getting 1,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and will start administering those tomorrow. And then something like 8K doses of the Moderna vaccine (assuming it gets EUA) will be coming in (I think) a couple of weeks. :yay: EDIT: As of right now, vaccine are not mandatory where I work.

As I read along I was actually shocked at just how many people are so trusting and want to go first. I wondered where all of the scared people like me were? I will be first to admit that I'm not to keen to be the first to put some new thing in my body when every day we see some new lawsuit on tv over "if you've ever taken X you may be entitled". I'm one of those that question most things and I stand by the fact that they have never in our history been able to find a vaccine or cure for the common cold but in 7 months they can come up with a vaccine for this? Forgive me but I'm just plain scared.

Cousin is ready to switch occupations if it becomes forced. So are many of her fellow nurses. Hard pass.

I hope your son has that opportunity soon.

The building blocks had already been worked on prior to this. This has been discussed in other threads as well if you want to know. It's not that they came up with a vaccine this year. They had already been working on one but financial, public interest and more meant it didn't go too too far.

A good but very brief description I found was:

"During the SARS1 (SARS-CoV-1) outbreak 18 years ago, researchers started looking at that virus, and other coronaviruses, and found a really promising vaccine target on the virus cell surface -- which is a protein called spike. That protein is what binds to human cells and leads to an infection. So about 10 years ago the science wheels started churning out strategies to vaccinate against SARS1. Unfortunately, funding dried up for SARS1 as that virus never made its way to the U.S., so a vaccine didn’t actually get developed. However, the research on the virus and ideas of how to vaccinate against it were already available."

"SARS2 (SARS-CoV-2, our current situation) uses almost the exact same version of that protein to infect cells and uses the exact same receptor on human cells. Due to these similarities, scientists were able to pick up where they left off, which sped up the process dramatically. Further, vaccination strategies have improved significantly in the last 10-plus years, particularly in the past couple of years with the mRNA technology that Moderna and Pfizer have utilized. All of these companies basically just took the DNA or RNA backbone of a vaccine that they had already built and plugged in the SARS2 spike protein’s genetic information."

Add in a global interest such that we really haven't seen with billions of dollars that frees up things and well it may still seem fast but there's at least reasons behind it.

This isn't to say your hesitancy in the vaccine isn't valid, it is, and others share your concern. I just wanted to give you some information.
