Played along with a sort of lie that isn't true - often for years on end? I thought this could be a funny topic!
Example; When I was younger my dad told me we were going to Greece for my 12th birthday. A bit before it my mum asked me how I felt about Greece, was I excited etc, I dunno what possessed me but I just looked her in the eye and said "We aren't going to Greece, mum, are we? I know we're going to Florida." I think I was joking but she looked horrified and said "How did you find out? Oh please don't let your Dad know, he'll be so upset with me!". So I had to keep up the pretence for about a month. At the airport, I had to pretend that I didn't see the screen above the check-in desk, or our boarding cards or any of the other obvious signs that we were clearly going to Orlando. I had already been practicing my reaction and when the captain announced that we were going to Orlando, I went "Dad, quick you've got to tell them we are on the wrong flight, we are supposed to be going to Greece." and then obviously he went "No Darling (it was REALLY cheesy), we are going back to Florida again. Its your birthday surprise from me." and I was like "Oh Daddy THANK you it'll be the BEST birthday EVER!" Told you it was cheesy!
Anyway, that was 12 years ago and the other day my Dad was talking about how surprised I was and how he had managed to keep it a secret
. Ha, I just don't have the heart to tell him I already knew.
Another example: My best friend and her fiancee of almost three years met when we were all in a show together. He told her that he fell in love with her the minute he saw her and she always tells everyone that their eyes met across the crowded rehearsal room and they fell in love at first sight. And she REALLY believes it. Well here's how I remember it. First rehearsal, her fiancee to be makes a beeline for ME and turns on the charm. I'm polite but not interested because he is nearly twenty years older than me and REALLY cheesy (in case you haven't noticed I'm not into the cheese). He follows me around for around six weeks. He tells me "You're looking very sexy..." and the like and is really keen to kiss me and I just continue to be respectful but not interested
. He continues to flirt with me, then another girl, then ANOTHER girl (none of us interested haha) and eventually he tries it on with my best friend who falls for the act. And the rest is history lol! When he said he had a new girlfriend, everyone assumed it was me. My friend was all uppity, saying "Why does everyone think its you that is with him and not me? Our names aren't even that similar!" Its really funny because there is still today a kind of an awkwardness between us because I think he is petrified that I am going to tell my friend the truth one day! But I'm not!
So - what are your funny stories?
