Have you ever used sick time when you gave 2 weeks notice

I have read my company's corporate policies numerous times. I do not get paid for the sick time I have not used (15 days). I would like to know if I can use one sick day during my 2 weeks notice.
Burning bridges is not an issue and all of my work is done. Does anyone know if it is possible for my company to deduct 8 hours from my final paycheck if I decide to use a sick day?

Probably only your HR dept. can answer this question for you. Most companies I've worked for would not pay for any time taken off after giving notice. Current employer does not allow you to take time off during your final 2 weeks (i.e., if you do, it's unpaid).

Hey Airplane! I'm "near AC" too! Anyway, company policies differ on how many days you have to physically "work' before your final day. At my job, you must have a certain amount of days worked before your final day (so that people don't call out sick for their entire last two weeks on the schedule). So, it's not really about whether they pay you your unused sick time, it's about how may work days that you are responsible for before your finnal day. Your human resources department should be able to tell you that.

Like others have said, I honestly doubt it. I've never heard of a company allowing sick time after giving notice.

I was, once, able to use my vacation time after giving notice. I had already requested and been approved for that time off and was going to be out of town. They didn't rescind on that just because I gave notice.

I've seen it happen, but only in a case where the employee gave more than 2 week's notice. Specifically, he gave 4 weeks notice then decided to use PTO for his last day (a Friday), effectively making Thursday his last day.

We had a guy get his vacation approved, which started on a Monday. The Friday prior to vacation, he turned in his two weeks'!! :) Too funny.

Working in that same place, I took off every Friday for about 2 months prior to turning in my two weeks'. :)

It was a rotten place to work!

I think I would have used the sick time before I put in my two weeks notice.

That is what I would have done.

I think it depends. I have given my notice and found out my "personal" time will be lost if I don't use it. I am using it to come in late Friday morning. Maybe it's different because it's personal and not sick time?

i think it would depend on the company's definition of what sick time can be used for. if it is only for days actualy sick, md appointments or child/spouse md appointments, berevement-unless the day you want to take off falls under this they would be within their rights to not pay for the time.

on a related note-worked for a government agency that allowed you to amass as many hours of sick leave as you received (12 days per year) for the duration of your career, but if you did'nt use it you lost it upon quitting or retirement. there were staff members who had MONTHS on the books! until there was a change in policy that allowed the time to convert additional service time (and result in an increase in pension) it was routine for some of the nearing retirement folks to be written off work by a sympathetic m.d. for just enough time to use their sick leave and then retire out. once they allowed it to convert those folks worked up until the last minute (and alot cashed out huge amounts of vacation and float and comp time -you could amass up to 3 years of each which for some equated to 26 weeks! talk about a nice final pay check :teeth: ).

I've had two times that I gave three weeks notice and took a pre-scheduled vacation in the middle week.

My last job paid out any unused PTO time, so when I left I walked away with a couple weeks extra pay in my final weeks paycheck--that was nice considering I didn't have another job lined up and wasn't going to be leigible for UE.

People at my job do it all the time, but we get paid sick time if we call out sick. Per our HR department, the rules are the same as long as you are employed. What that means is that if your company deducts sick time out of your paycheck, then if you call in sick during your last 2 weeks notice period, then they can still deduct that.

BTW, when someone has given their notice and then starts calling out, we all pretty much  . It's cheesy.

at my company you can use sick for whatever you want. there are no policies that you have to be sick. furthermore, people here take vacation/sick their last two weeks all the time, so i assume it is not a problem at my company. but i would definitely check with with your hr person.

In NY once you give notice(2 weeks) the employer has the right to tell you not to come to work or not even schedule you...It is a Right to work state. Most will let you work and appericate the notice-but there are slimy ones out there. Personally I would take sick time, if you have gotten to the point where you have to leave an employer, than you need a "mental health day" :goodvibes
