I was wondering if you have ever seen a CM at one of the four parks remind someone to smoke in the designated area only? I know this is a hot issue and I don’t want to debate the policy. I think most people who know about the policy follow it. Last time I was there it was only a small paragraph in the guide map. I think they need more signs. (Unless they have added some since my last visit) I was wondering if the CM enforce the current policy? :scratchin :scratchin

Yes I have but last trip I did not. I watched a child almost get burned by someone standing smoking and waving her butt all over as she was talking. I also saw three CM go by her and say nothing.

No, I have never seen them remind anyone. There are announcements on the trams, monorails, ferry, boats, etc.. before you get into the park about the parks being non-smoking parks (please check a map or ask CM for a smoking spot.) We saw a lot of people smoking while walking around the past few weeks when it was busy, but otherwise people tend to listen.

I've seen CM's approach smokers a couple times.
Once at MK near Alladin's Magic Carpets. The couple was smoking, the CM talked to them, pointing out the Smoking area, the couple nodded. After the CM left they continued to smoke but this time hiding the cigarette from view in a cupped hand. :guilty:
I also saw a man on a bench smoking near the fast pass entrance to the Safari in AK. A CM approached him and explained that there was no smoking there. The man immediately put out his cigarette. The rest of us sitting there were very thankful.

Yes. One day during our Dec 04 trip. We were at Epcot going from World Showcase back to Future World. It was two males and a female, looked like 20 somethings, only one guy was smoking. When the CM approached the smoker, he got positively nasty with him for enforcing the rules. The smoker yelled obscenities at the CM. My sister is asthmatic and none of the rest of our party like smoking so we were glad to see it enforced but felt sorry for the CM. He shouldn't have had to take that for doing his job. We felt that the smoker should have been thrown out of the park, not so much for smoking outside the designated area but for how he reacted and treated the CM. JMHO

My DD is a CM (seasonal now) and is a vehement anti-smoker, so she takes great glee in telling people they need to put out their smokes or move. :earsboy:

I have seen them, but I also fully understand why they don't want to.. Would you want to be yelled at like the story xterratri posted.

If you ask them to they will say something, but I think if no one complains they figure no one is upset.

I am a smoker. And I do want y'all to know, that my Boyfriend (smoker also) and I only smoke in the designated smoking areas! I promise. Disney has to many beautiful spots with wonderful benches for us to use. I am sorry that there are some smoking areas that are on the direct path and we do try to avoid these for people with breathing problems. For those who smoke and ignore the designated smoking areas, shame on you. But please remember there are those of us who smoke that are respectful of the policy. And yes, I have been told that I wasn't in a designated smoking area by a CM, but I showed her I was standing next to a can that had the ashtray on top. The CM couldn't believe it. Then she showed me where someone had dragged the can to that area. Did I gripe or complain? Nope. I put my cigarette out and helped her move it to the correct spot. Smile and lit up another one. So please, do not group all smokers into the "don't-care-will-light-up-anywhere-because-I-paid-for-this-vacation-like-you-did!" group. Trust me, my boyfriend and I point out to smokers where the smoking areas are. We have gotten rude comments back for saying something, then I usually hold up my pack and smile and say "We'll see you there."

Just wanted to let you know, there are smokers out there who are good! :teeth:

Chris

I have never seen them say anything either. I am a smoker, but know to go the designated areas. People who don't tee me off. I couldn't /wouldn't take the chance of hurting anyone with a cigarette by burning them.

Yes, I recently saw a CM approach someone smoking in front of Hall of Presidents and tell them it was not a designated smoking area, I also saw someone smoking on the porch of Liberty Tree Tavern. A couple of minutes later someone inside waiting for a table complained and a CM went out and told them they could not smoke there. The person asked if they could then smoke in the restaurant, which of course they could not.

But in general, in all of my days at Disney, those were the only two times I saw anyone told not to smoke.

What burns me up is a smoker who is walking through a WDW park with one lit. So dangerous. Please find a smoker's designated area and stay put.

If you see someone smoking, feel free to make a cast member aware of the situation.

While I was at WDW ( now seasonal ) I had more guests point it out to me, than times I had caught it myself. I had been yelled at numerous times, but I take it with a grain of salt.

Yes, I have.... when they had to move the smoking section at Epcot to place the kiosk for the Candlelight processional. There was a CM from Guest Relations who had NO problem approaching and redirecting smokers. They called her the "smoke police"! I believe she works at DTD now, and is just as adament.

FanofGOOfy, thanks for being a courteous smoker! And that part about the moved trash barrel - I can't imagine the person desperate enough to haul it out of the smoking area, but thanks for moving it back! (I love the dancing banana...)

I've pointed out smokers to CMs and they have all told the smokers where the smoking area is, etc. I have no problem going up to people myself as well. My oldest daughter has a very sensitive throat - smoke and mold get her coughing so badly that she sounds like she has asthma.

I haven't seen it but we just got back and I really didn't notice too many people smoking in non-designated areas.

There are alot of designated areas but the problem is finding some of them, I found it rather frustrating sometimes because there are no real signs and some of the areas were in places I didn't even know existed, lol. The map only helped to a point and I had to ask CM's a few times. Universal makes it very clear where the areas are with stand up ashtrays that are hard to miss, I think if DW did this, it would help alot.

Yes, I have. The CM very politely informed the offending party and escorted them to the smoking area--just a few feet away. The CM was really very nice and offered the information in a "thought you'd like to know there are designated areas" sort of way.

Disney likes to blend things into the surroundings, which is why it is one of the most beautiful theme parks in the United States!:)

Yes on our last trip I saw it many times, I think it is being enforced more. My girlfriend went with her chain smoking mother last summer who insists on flaunting the rules and playing dumb. She said she got busted left and right and they were all laughing at her for it.

I have seen offenders but I have never seen a CM talk to someone about it. I have politely asked people on a few occasions. Once they saw my DS with a surgical mask on due to health problems, they were more than willing to put it out or go to a smoking area. I thanked them profusely for understanding. It means a lot to me to know that other people do care enough to worry about how it may affect others. However, DS no longer has the surgical mask (   ) so we'll see how it goes this time. I will NOT be the one to request at this point though. Sometimes if people don't see a good "reason" to comply, requests from others don't matter and I certainly wouldn't want to say something to the wrong person and risk getting hollered at!!

To all of the smokers out there who are courteous and use the designated areas, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Never, and i have seen (smelled) plenty of smokers in non-designated places. I wish they would put up more signs (along with "please don't feed the seagulls" signs! ) :goodvibes
