Have you ever ordered a holiday meal from a supermarket?

I"m considering ordering a turkey or ham holiday meal for Christmas from Stop & Shop this year. It's $60 for 4-6 people all prepared & cooked &, in addition to the meat, it comes with a bunch of sides, gravy, dessert.

Seems like a good deal. Any reviews from anyone who has done this (from any market)? Which market & what did you think?

::yes:: I agree that the price is a good deal; it costs 2 or 3 times that much to buy all the ingredients for a turkey dinner the way we make it. But I'm sure the meal wouldn't include all the same things we traditionally have and the ones it does include may not be to our taste. If I couldn't manage in the kitchen for any reason we'd probably order Chinese or something before we'd order a turkey dinner that ended up being a disappointment.

Must have been a while since we did it because we paid $25! It was fine.

With 2 little ones, I just don't feel like being in the kitchen all day for Christmas this year. I want to spend it playing & relaxing with my kids :) We do Chinese food on Christmas Eve.

I'd say at that price it's worth a try then, especially if everybody in the house is on-board and not likely to complain if something isn't "just so". :thumbsup2

We ordered a turkey meal from Publix the first year I was unable to cook for Thanksgiving. Even though there are only three of us, we added a few sides to have the variety we were used to. It was fine. The major negative was that we had to pick it up on Wed. & reheat it on Thanksgiving. If not for that, we would have ordered from there again. After that, we started piecing together a meal from a variety of restaurants (Honey Baked Ham, Cracker Barrel & Boston Market mostly), along with Publix. I had poor DH driving all over the place to collect our meal. Now that DS is older, we go out to eat.

The one you get are cold and have to be reheated. I wouldn't do them again. Just my preference.

Make sure to read the fine print because DH's boss ordered one last year from a local restaurant because his wife had a c-section the Monday before Thanksgiving. He was more than a bit shocked when he picked it up Thursday (on their at home from the hospital) and everything was frozen or cold. He still spent a couple of hours cooking...well, reheating.

I've done Christmas and new years eve dinners from wegmans. I'd highly recommend them. I'm not a fan of stop and shop prepared food so I haven't used them but if you are I'm sure it'll be good.

I'm doing it this year. $50 for a meal that feeds 8-10, not including dessert. It does state that it needs 48 hours to defrost.

About 10 years ago from Shop Rite. The turkey itself was good, the side dishes (stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and gravy) were disappointing.

Not from the supermarket but we have a turkey farm near us we've ordered from them once or twice. It was always awesome easy and I didn't have to spend I was cooking

I have, twice. Both times I was very disappointed. But I am fairly picky about my side dishes and they were just too run-of-the-mill and blah for me. Whole family was disappointed.

My in laws ordered one from the market on year because they were just too old to cook. It came with Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, Pumpkin pie, Green bean casserole and sweet potatoes. It was just enough. Not many leftovers. Note that it was rather institutional in flavor. Kind of blah. Not much flair to it. But all in all if you can't or don't want to cook, it will do. They had ham as well. That had au gratin potatoes instead of mashed and corn casserole instead of stuffing. You could pay extra for spiral ham or smoked turkey instead of the regular too.

Never bought one from stop and shop.

I have once in the past and I would never do it again. Food was bland and it tasted like it had been reheated (which it had been but still).

We're ordering from Cracker Barrel this year. There is only 3 of us, so we don't really need anything super fancy or want to spend a lot of time. It's a lot of food. But we'd probably spend the same on buying all of the ingredients and spices.

So we're going at 6am Thursday morning to pick it up. I also ordered a baker's dozen ham and biscuits and some gravy. So we'll come home and have breakfast, watch movies and play games. Heat up the meal (It has turkey, stuffing, 3 sides, rolls, sourdough bread, gravy and pies) eat and then go see a movie.

We haven't done the supermarket but we have done Boston Market. The nice thing about Boston Market is that if you have been there before, you know what you are getting.

Yep, we did it last year for the first time, because we were in WDW. We ordered from the local Publix and it was fantastic. In fact, we decided to do it again this year. We live 800 miles from any family, so it's just the 5 of us. Instead of cooking, we'd rather spend the time with the kids. It's something like $50 or $60 and includes all the food we need. I won't say it tastes exactly as good as what my wife and I make, but it's plenty tasty and oh so easy to make and clean up.

Wegmans and it was pretty good. I love the cater section at Wegmans (not really a fan of the rest of Wegmans) and have used them for several parties. Always good food, not bad pricing and great service when picking up. LOVE it.
