We recently returned from the Disney Magic Eastern Cruise that sailed March 19-26. This was our third Disney Cruise.

The Magic had Captain Tom, and I noticed in almost every picture in Shutters with the captain, that he would never look at the camera. Even the pixs taken w/ our camera do not show him looking into the camera. Is there a reason, cultural difference, security issue, etc. that he doesn't look at the camera? All the other officers smile and look at the camera.

Remembering back in time, I think that the other times we have been on the Magic and Wonder, the captain didn't look at the camera either. I'll have to check that out when I get home.

I was just WONDERing this MAGICal question. Does anyone have a theory? I have mine.......

Captain Tom is a great captain, but not a great people person....I have always found him to be less expressive, almost aloof, than any of the other Captains....my favorite is Capt. Henry!!!

I also noticed this on our cruise last Nov. DH even had the gall to tell Capt. Tom, during the castaway club gathering, that he had heard from a lot of people that Capt. Tom didn't have much of a personality. LOL I was soooo embarrassed that I just walked away from him and grabbed a drink from one of the servers. I couldn't believe that DH had actually said that to him, but I guess it didn't have any impact since Capt. Tom still isn't looking at the camera in pics.

We both really enjoyed meeting Capt. Henry on the Wonder. He is by far the friendlier of the two.

Interesting...I noticed the same thing in Shutters on our March 12th Western. Captain Tom was looking to the left (not at the camera) in almost all of the pictures. What's with that? He doesn't have to be super personable but, hey, at least look at the camera. Our photo looks kind of stupid with him staring off into space. :(

Well, at least Captain Thord was looking right into the camera when DW and I had our picture taken with him in January. I haven't had the honor to meet Captain Tom or Captain Henry.

Yes! We were laughing about this with our table mates - ALL the pictures at shutters with Capt Tom had him looking away from the camera!

pdarrah

Captain Thord was extremely personable whenever we saw him in December. He teased my DS and got DD to giggle when we had our picture taken with him.

DW and I noticed the same thing on the 3/19 Eastern. Seems a shame for all the folks who waited in the long line to have their picture taken with him. He's got to realize that onboard he's basically a celebrity who can brighten most anyone's day with a simple smile and personal comment (plus help Shutters sell a few more pix).

I noticed this too. But remember, Captain Tom is the nuts and bolts Captain, over saw the design and building of the ships, and oversees the other Captains. I can see where someone who may be a top notch "Captain" may not be the best host on a cruise ship.
Sort of like some of the best doctors, they can cure anything that ails you, but they have no bedside manner.

If you don't look at the camera directly, you have a better chance of not having "red eye" in the picture, maybe he is prone to "red eye" (my whole family in every picture that is straight on gets red eye and I am constantly editing the pictures to get rid of it. Just my thoughts.

My Dad does the same thing. It's shyness on his part....Maybe the Captain is shy?

DW and I have only met captain Henry but found him to be very nice. When we met, I asked him, "So have there been any sightings of the Black Pearl at all?" to which he replied "After the waves we had last night, there could have been!" I thought that was pretty neat. ;)

I hadn't noticed this before, but my immdiate thought was the same as above. He's very expericned with photos and this probably assures that he doesn't mess up "our" pictures with red eye.

I have thought about the red eye theory, but he looks so far off to the side that it looks silly. If you look OVER the camera, and not at the lens or the flash, usually there is no red eye. Also, with the new technologies in the photo industry, they can take the red eye out of any photo with the click of a button.

Here's my theory, based on many movies and books....

This could be a security issue. Perhaps there is a something that requires only him and certain others to access it, and they do a retinal scan for security clearance. Just like they do in the movies! I know this is far fetched, but who knows for sure????

I like this theory even more!

I'm with TVguy. Notice, at least one of the captains is European? Europeans are very different in personality, mannerisms, etc.. These captains are thrown into celebrity status and would you as a cruiser have a 'cute' or 'attrative' captain or one who really knows how to run a ship who happens to be cute or attractive? Now, would you want Fabio to change the transmission of your car or look good mowing the lawn? I pick the lawn, I'd want to keep my car.

Cut the captains some slack.

I don't believe that anyone was delibrately disrespecting the captains. We all admire them and their work, and want a knowledgeable man commanding the ships at sea, especially during challenging times like rough seas when decisions need to be made to keep the passengers and crew safe, not to mention the ship itself.

It's just like airplane pilots. I don't care how personable they are, I just want to fly safely. In fact, I prefer older pilots because they probably have a lot more takeoffs, flight time, and landings under their shoulders.

I just wondered why Captain Tom doesn't look at the camera?
