You know the one that got sent around via email with the story of a woman who bought it for what she thought was $2.50 when really it was $250? The story is fake, but I'm wondering about the recipe? Has anyone actually tried it?

Never tried it, maybe this year.

Here it is

An urban myth is a modern folk tale, its origins unknown, its believability enhanced
simply by the frequency with which it is repeated. Our signature chocolate chip cookie
is the subject of one such myth. If you haven't heard the story, we won't perpetuate it
here. If you have, the recipe below should serve to refute it. Copy it, print it out, pass it along to friends and family. It's a terrific recipe. And it's absolutely free.

Ingredients

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1-3/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 teaspoons instant espresso coffee powder
1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Cream the butter with the sugars using an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy (approximately 30 seconds)

2. Beat in the egg and the vanilla extract for another 30 seconds.

3. In a mixing bowl, sift together the dry ingredients and beat into the butter mixture at low speed for about 15 seconds. Stir in the espresso coffee powder and chocolate chips.

4. Using a 1 ounce scoop or a 2 tablespoon measure, drop cookie dough onto a greased cookie sheet about 3 inches apart. Gently press down on the dough with the back of a spoon to spread out into a 2 inch circle. Bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely browned around the edges. Bake a little longer for a crispier cookie.

Yield: 2 dozen cookies

Now that's a different recipe from the email. It seems more logical. The one sent with the email (see below) seems like it has too much sugar.

NEIMAN-MARCUS COOKIES (Recipe may be halved)

5 cups blended oatmeal
2 cups butter
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. soda
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 - 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)

Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine powder.
Cream the butter and both sugars.
Add eggs and vanilla, mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.
Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar, and nuts.
Roll into balls, and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.

Hmm... Wonder why they are so different?

I've made it, they were VERY good..........although it made a TON of cookies!! (which was really no problem :rolleyes1 )

I made them once. They were good but basic chocolate chip are easier - less ingredients. I should try them again it's been awhile

I should try it, I need the vanilla (ran out cooking for thanksgiving) and I need to buy the coffee (can I skip this) and the chocolate chips.

I've not seen the recipe in post #2. I have made the recipe in post #3 which was in the email my friend received years ago. It's a great cookie and makes a very large batch.

I made them - everyone said my usual chocolate chip cookies were way better than them, and they were more of a pain to make.

My wife's made 'em....some of the BEST cookies I've ever eaten or ate or et.

:jumping1:

I made the ones in post 3 as well. Never saw the one w/ the coffee.

I think I'll try making them (the recipe I posted)--oh, heck I should try them both. The email one does seem like a lot of extra work. I always put oatmeal in my cookies anyway, so I wonder if it will be that much better.

These cookies are AWESOME! My mom and I used to make them fairly often, but grating the chocolate takes too long!

We skip the coffee.

I made the recipe (without the coffee) then went into labor with DS that night. I guess it was "nesting". LOL. They were delicious though.

I have made these for years...the ones without coffee. It is my father's favorite cookie that I make, and I usually make about 15-20 different kinds at Christmas. Personally, it is not my favorite...it is very crunchy...but the recipe does make a boat-load, so if you're into giving cookie plates, this will fill up a bunch of space.
