First, I'm fully aware that we are not supposed to add links to things that we personally sell, but what about linking to things that we do not sell, but for informative purposes?

Now, on to the purpose of my post... September will be our very first trip to Disney World, and while my husband and I are from Georgia and are very used to how hot it can get in the south during the summer... I'm still worried about that putting a damper on our Disney fun. So... off to google I went.

I found this product called a Handy Cooler. It's about 40 bucks, but it claims it can cool you by up to 30 degrees. At first glance, my "its too good to be true" radar is going off. But, I've been able to read some reviews that point in the direction that it might actually work.

I was just wondering if anyone here had heard of this product, and better yet used this product... and if there is any possibility that it might offer some relief from the scorching Florida sun.

Thanks!

IMO, I would save the $40 and spend it on Mickey bars and dole whips to keep cool. :thumbsup2

I don't think September will be so warm that you need to invest in a personal fan, especially if you are from Georgia and are used to the Southern heat.

There are more economical ways to beat the heat - take a bandana, soak it in cool water and drape it over your neck. Step into a store or restaurant to cool down (we like to have our big meal at lunch, when we need a break). Don't forget that many of lines for the rides are inside. Freeze your water bottle the night before and carry it with you in the parks. Ask for a cup of ice, I believe that it's free.

Have a magical trip!

cool downz bandanas or other similar bandanas with cooling crystals in them work just as well and you can generally get them for $2-$5 each. I take 2 for each person. We take one to the parks and put the others in the ice bucket in the room with ice when we leave. When we come back at midday we exchange them out. If you feel it has stopped working, step into the restroom and rinse with cold water. I do not tolerate heat well, but these do wonders for me!

Where can you get these? I think my mother would benefit greatly from them, not just at DW but in the real world too!

I bought a similar product with the "crystals" inside and they worked slightly better than a cold wet cloth for about 3 days before they started leaking crystals and we had to get rid of them, but these were Avon brand coolers and not the brands discussed here. I have no experience with the other brands. Personally, I have really liked the "cooling stick" they sell in the UK shop in Epcot. They are by the perfumes and they are a gel "stick" which you apply to pressure points. It actually does cool you more than you'd think!

I've never used any of those products but I would definitely try any of them. We went in mid-October last year and the heat index was 106 almost every day. We are from South Alabama so we are used to the heat but we were miserable that week. It was the hottest I've ever been!!

The Handy Cooler uses evaporative cooling.

Which according to Wikipedia:

Evaporative cooling is especially well suited for climates where the air is hot and humidity is low.

Which I don't know all the ins and outs of yearly weather in Fl. But its rarely ever called hot and dry.

Here is the link if you want to check it out.

I never liked the bands with the crystals. Whenever we tried them they got hot too quickly and then got slimy.

Maybe we sweat too much for them.

You can get the bandanna style things in the sports/camping section of Walmart. They are only about 2 inches wide and are folded so they can be hard to spot unless you know what you are looking for.

I agree with PP that said to get at least 2 per person. I put them in a ziplock bag in a small cooler with ice for the parks because we usually don't go back to the room. We switch them out when needed. Just don't leave them in the plastic bag overnight because they will mold.

You put them in water for about 30 mins to activate them and when you are done with them hang them up to dry. The can be used over and over. You don't want to squeeze the part with the crystals when it is wet because it will "ooze" a little. But as long as you are just wearing it around your neck you will be fine.

I live and garden in Santa Fe New Mexico and the bandanas are a life saver for me. They really make a huge difference in how long I can stay out in the sun.
I soak them in water with a little bleach or rubbing alcohol and it keeps them from getting that mildew smell. If you let them dry out once in a while and microwave them for about sixty seconds it will kill mildew and mold.

We are going to the world in September 2010 and I will take them along.

I do have to agree with the posters that say to save the money and get the bandanas. We were there last September and the heat was terrible for me, I had forgot to pack the ones I have and certainly wish I had not.

I certainly wish I had known of the gel stick at the UK Pavilion, would have tried that.

No matter what you decide to do, do stay hydrated, with walking in the parks and tho you are from the south and more used to higher temps, you would be suprised just how quickly you could suffer from dehydration. We carry a water bottle with us at all times. I also carry flavor packets to flavor the water with as plain water gets boring at times.

Good luck and have lots of fun.

I would try the cooling badanas and not the fan.You can buy small fans that are cheaper in walmart.I'am from GA also and hae been to disneyworld and you never get used to the heat that is in FL

I dragged DH through every aisle of the camping, sports, fishing section of two Walmarts and we found nothing :confused3 stupid Walmart. I'm going to order them online lol

To the pp try EMS, Models, Olymia Sports or any other large sporting goods chain. We always use those little personel fans with the misters when we go. My DD is a cheerleader and when practice starts in the August heat that is what they use during practice breaks. Believe me they do work up a sweat doing that.

We go for a couple of weeks every September and it can be just as hot as July! The bandanas sound like a good idea!

I have to agree - the last time I went to WDW in September it was as hot as a normal August in my hometown in NC. Very high temperatures in the upper 90s and high humidity. This was the 3rd week in September - I don't think Florida really starts to "cool" down any in September, maybe not until mid October to November. September can be brutal.

I didn't find the bandanas particularly helpful. Anything that cools by evaporation doesn't work in high humidity, because nothing evaporates.
